Protected Mode Software Architecture

Anyone writing real-time operating systems, multi-task operating systems, or device drivers for these systems needs to be able to do assembly language protected-mode programming. Protected Mode Software Architecture helps readers understand the problems that single-task and multitasking operating systems must deal with, and then examines each component of both the real and protected mode software architectures of the post-286 Intel processors.

Turning the Tables

In the nineteenth century, restaurants served French food to upper-class Americans with aristocratic pretensions, but by the turn of the century, even the best restaurants cooked ethnic and American foods for middle-class urbanites. In Turning the Tables, Andrew P. Haley examines how the transformation of public dining that established the middle class as the arbiter of American culture was forged through battles over French-language menus, scientific eating, cosmopolitan cuisines, unescorted women, un-American tips, and servantless restaurants.

ETAPS’99 is the second instance of the EuropeanJoint Conferences on T- ory and Practice of Software. ETAPS is an annual federated conference that was established in 1998 by combining a number of existing and new conferences. This year it comprises ?ve conferences (FOSSACS, FASE, ESOP, CC, TACAS), four satellite workshops (CMCS, AS, WAGA, CoFI), seven invited lectures, two invited tutorials, and six contributed tutorials. The events that comprise ETAPS address various aspects of the system - velopment process, including speci?cation, design, implementation, analysis and improvement. The languages, methodologies and tools which support these - tivities are all well within its scope. Di?erent blends of theory and practice are represented, with an inclination towards theory with a practical motivation on one hand and soundly-based practice on the other. Many of the issues involved in software design apply to systems in general, including hardware systems, and the emphasis on software is not intended to be exclusive.

No single solution applied at one particular layer can help applications solve all performance-related issues with communication services. Instead, this book shows that a coordinated effort is needed among the layers. It covers many different types of technologies and layers across the stack, from the architectural features of the hardware, through the protocols and their implementation in operating system kernels, to the manner in which application services and middleware are using underlying platforms. The book also describes key developments in high-end platforms, high performance interconnection fabrics and communication libraries, and multi- and many-core systems.
