Untying the Mother Tongue
Untying the Mother Tongue explores what it might mean today to speak of someone's attachment to a particular, primary language. Traditional conceptions of mother tongue are often seen as an expression of the ideology of a European nation-state. Yet, current celebrations of multilingualism reflect the recent demands of global capitalism, raising other challenges. The contributions from international scholars on literature, philosophy, and culture, analyze and problematize the concept of 'mother tongue', rethinking affective and cognitive attachments to language while deconstructing its metaphysical, capitalist, and colonialist presuppositions.
Edmond Jabès and the Archaeology of the Book
This book offers a fresh reflection on The Book of Questions by the French-Egyptian Jewish writer Edmond Jabès and its readings, and proposes to re-contextualize Jabès' enigmatic prose through the lens of the author’s manuscripts. Addressed are the main prisms through which Jabès’ oeuvre has been read since its publication in 1963: Jewishness, the Shoah, intertextuality with Midrash and Kabbalah, hermeticism and interpretation. It analyzes their shapes and their becoming in the work-in-progress, reveals the dynamics and the contexts of their evolution from the pre-texts to the text and beyond, and reflects on the relationship between creation, interpretation, and writing as a process. It seeks to rethink our reading of The Book of Questions and the poetics and hermeneutics of enigmatic writing.
European Peripheries in the Postcolonial Literary Imagination
This book explores the meanings of European peripheries in postcolonial literary imagination. While colonial discourses have constructed Europe as the centre, the continent is internally divided into centres and peripheries. Approaching the question of European peripherality in a variety of geographical and linguistic contexts and across national and diasporic literary traditions of postcolonial writing, the contributions in this volume attest to the entangled and relational character of the centre/periphery nexus. Acknowledging the unbalanced power structures between centres and peripheries, the volume sets out to challenge conventional ideas about peripheries and places European peripheral loci at the centre of postcolonial literary inquiry. The chapters in the volume draw on diverse theoretical and conceptual frameworks in order to address, among others, the link between peripherality and provincialism, the relations between intra-European and colonial peripheries, and the progressive potential of European peripheries as postcolonial spaces. The chapters in this book were originally published in the Journal of Postcolonial Writing.

Drawing on theories and methods from other disciplines such as literary studies, neuroscience, and book history, the authors discuss the physical practices of writing, social contexts of texts and manuscripts, and scribes themselves. The papers examine a wide range of manuscripts, including letters, medical compendia, poems, religious corpora, and other text genres, written on varied media in different time periods. The resulting collection offers new perspectives on the key role of scribes in ancient Egypt and models more contextualized and materially informed modes of philology.
Genetic Translation Studies
Examining the research possibilities, debates and challenges posed by the emerging field of genetic translation studies, this book demonstrates how, both theoretically and empirically, genetic criticism can shed much-needed light on translators' archives, the translator figure and the creative process of translation. Genetic Translation Studies analyses a diverse range of translation materials including manuscripts, typographical proofs, personal papers, letters, testimonies and interviews in order to give visibility, body and presence to translators. Chapters draw on translations of works by authors such as Saint-John Perse, Nikos Kazantzakis, René Char, António Lobo Antunes and Camilo Castelo Branco, in each case revealing the conflicts and collaborations between translators and other stakeholders, including authors, editors and publishers. Der vorliegende Band widmet sich dem deutschen Landjudentum aus literaturhistorischer Perspektive und geht der Frage nach, inwiefern die jahrhundertelange Existenz jüdischer Gemeinden im ländlichen Raum erzählliterarisch auf Widerhall stieß. Den Ausgangspunkt dieser Spurensuche bildet eine historisch fundierte Klärung des Begriffs „Landjude“, der im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts einem Wandel unterworfen war und zusehends zum Gegenbild des kulturell assimilierten, städtischen Juden geriet. Als Projektionsfläche heranziehen und argumentativ vereinnahmen ließ sich der „Landjude“ von mancherlei Seite. So behandelt der erste Teil von „Land, Dorf, Kehilla“ wesentlich Texte nicht-jüdischer Autoren der Spät- und Gegenaufklärung, während der zweite Teil den Erzählungen jüdischer Autoren des 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts vorbehalten bleibt und auf den zeitgenössischen innerjüdischen Diskurs abstellt.
Representing Algerian Women
This monograph explores the ways in which canonical Francophone Algerian authors, writing in the late-colonial period (1945–1962), namely Kateb Yacine, Mohammed Dib, Mouloud Feraoun, Mouloud Mammeri and Assia Djebar, approached the representation of Algerian women through literature. The book initially argues that a masculine domination of public fields of representation in Algeria contributed to a postcolonial marginalization of women as public agents. Literature and Politics in the Later Foucault
This study proposes a revised interpretation of Foucault’s views on literature. It has been argued that the philosopher’s interest in literature was limited to the 1960s and of a mostly depoliticized nature. However, Foucault’s previously unpublished later works suggest a different reality, showing a sustained interest in literature and its politics. In the light of this new material, the book repositions Foucault's ideas within recent debates on the politics of literature.
