The papers brought together in the present volume represent the essence of the author s reflections on issues concerning linguistic historiography and of particular investigations in 19th and 20th century linguistic thought. The papers are clustered in three sections: I. Towards a Historiography of Linguistics, II. Appraisals of Individual Scholars, and III. Trends and Traditions in Linguistics.
This volume presents the first full-scale biography of Daniel Jones, a preeminent scholar and leading British phonetician of the early twentieth century, and the first linguist to hold a chair at a British university. This book, richly illustrated with partly unpublished material traces Jones's life and career, including his contacts with other linguists, and with figures outside the linguistic world notably Robert Bridges and George Bernard Shaw.
Apart from the names of Jan Baudouin de Courtenay (1845 1929), Miko?aj Kruszewski (1851 1887), and, later, Jerzy Kury?owicz (1895 1978), Polish linguists and Polish linguistics generally have been little known in the West. The first two were mentioned with approval by Saussure in an unpublished paper, and this reference was picked up by Roman Jakobson and others many years later. Kury?owicz, for his part, made himself well known in the West through his important work as Indo-Europeanist, even Semiticist, and as a general linguist. The present volume is a first attempt to broaden the perspectives on the Polish contribution to linguistics both inside and outside of Poland during the past centur...
The original (1985) edition of this work attempted to cover the main lines of development of phonological theory from the end of the 19th century through the early 1980s. Much work of importance, both theoretical and historiographic, has appeared in subsequent years, and the present edition tries to bring the story up to the end of the 20th century, as the title promised. This has involved an overall editing of the text, in the process correcting some errors of fact and interpretation, as well as the addition of new material and many new references.
This volume is a comprehensive collection of critical essays on The Taming of the Shrew, and includes extensive discussions of the play's various printed versions and its theatrical productions.

This volume demonstrates that phonology is a subsystem of the mind/brain and explores the theoretical and practical (including medical) consequences of this insight. Written by American and European specialists at the cutting-edge of research in areas ranging from phonetics to neurology, the book addresses central questions relating to the cognitive status of phonological representation and phonetic implementation and the links between mental and physical representation of sound systems.
