Unquiet Pasts
This important book addresses critical themes in the development of archaeology as a reflexive, self-critical discipline in the modern world. It explores the ethical, political and cultural tensions and responsibilities which need to be addressed by archaeologists when working within networks of global ecologies and communities, examining how authoritarian traditions can exacerbate the divide between expert and public knowledge. Moreover, it analyses how localized acts of archaeology relate to changing conceptions of risk, heritage, culture, identity, and conflict. Bringing insights from Alain Schnapp, Michael Shanks, Isabelle Stengers, Bruno Latour, Ulrich Beck, John Urry and others to cross-disciplinary discussions of these themes, Unquiet Pasts shows how archaeological discourse can contribute towards engaging and understanding current dilemmas. It also shows how archaeology, as a localized and responsibly exercised practice, can play a part in building our commonly shared and experienced world.
The Cultural Landscape & Heritage Paradox
The basic problem is to what extent we can know past and mainly invisible landscapes, and how we can use this still hidden knowledge for actual sustainable management of landscape's cultural and historical values. It has also been acknowledged that heritage management is increasingly about 'the management of future change rather than simply protection'. This presents us with a paradox: to preserve our historic environment, we have to collaborate with those who wish to transform it and, in order to apply our expert knowledge, we have to make it suitable for policy and society. The answer presented by the Protection and Development of the Dutch Archaeological-Historical Landscape programme (pdl/bbo) is an integrative landscape approach which applies inter- and transdisciplinarity, establishing links between archaeological-historical heritage and planning, and between research and policy.

Burgen in Schleswig-Holstein
Burgen in Schleswig-Holstein sind bisher die großen Unbekannten der Landesgeschichte. Dieser Band zeigt, wo die bedeutendsten Burgen im Norden lagen und welche Rolle sie für Wirtschaft, Verkehr und Gesellschaft des Mittelalters spielten. Burgen waren Zentren von Macht und Wirtschaft. Im Mittelalter entstanden in Schleswig-Holstein zahlreiche bedeutende Burgenbauten – wenige aus Stein, die meisten aus Erde, Lehm und Holz. Viele davon sind heute daher verschwunden und vergessen. Der von Oliver Auge herausgegebene Band zeigt eine spannende Spurensuche nach den Burgen von früher und danach, was heute von ihnen übriggeblieben ist. Kulturlandschaften
Vieles, was wir für ursprüngliche Natur halten, ist in Wirklichkeit Kulturlandschaft: vom Menschen genutzt, vom Menschen geformt. In der Lüneburger Heide treffen wir nicht auf Natur, sondern auf eine Landschaft, die seit 5000 Jahren von Menschen gestaltet wurde. Mit diesen Landschaften gehen wir nur dann richtig um, wenn wir sie auch in Zukunft pflegen und gestalten. Dabei schützen wir dann aber keine Natur, sondern Landschaft oder Kulturlandschaft. Die künftige Kulturlandschaft wird auch von heutiger Nutzung geprägt; aktuelle Entwicklungen sind in den Entwicklungsgang der Landschaft einzuordnen. Die Aufsätze sind die schriftlichen Fassungen von Vorträgen, die im Sommersemester 2005 im Rahmen einer Ringvorlesung an der Universität Hannover gehalten wurden.
