A Pàtria (1888), una autoantologia de la poesia civil escrita al llarg d'un quart de segle, s'aplegaven quaranta-sis poesies. Verdaguer hi va recollir alguns dels seus èxits literaris fins aleshores ( «A Barcelona», «La barretina», «Nit de sang»...) i d'altres que ho serien en el futur («L'emigrant», «Lluny de ma terra»...). En el llibre hi són presents tots aquells elements que configuren la noció verdagueriana de pàtria: el paisatge, la història, els costums, els mites, els homes, la religiositat, l'enyor de la terra. El volum té l'interès de mostrar un ventall ampli de temes, formes i registres de la poesia verdagueriana i, sens dubte, conté algunes de les seves composicions més rellevants i emblemàtiques.
