Biosimulation in Drug Development

This first comprehensive survey to cover all pharmaceutically relevant topics provides a comprehensive introduction to this novel and revolutionary tool, presenting both concepts and application examples of biosimulated cells, organs and organisms. Following an introduction to the role of biosimulation in drug development, the authors go on to discuss the simulation of cells and tissues, as well as simulating drug action and effect. A further section is devoted to simulating networks and populations, and the whole is rounded off by a look at the potential for biosimulation in industrial drug development and for regulatory decisions. Part of the authors are members of the BioSim Network of Excellence that encompasses more than 40 academic institutions, pharmaceutical companies and regulatory authorities dealing with drug development; other contributors come from industry, resulting in a cross-disciplinary expert reference.

The Chemical Element

In the International Year of Chemistry, prominent scientists highlight the major advances in the fight against the largest problems faced by humanity from the point of view of chemistry, showing how their science is essential to ensuring our long-term survival. Following the UN Millennium Development Goals, the authors examine the ten most critical areas, including energy, climate, food, water and health. All of them are opinion leaders in their fields, or high-ranking decision makers in national and international institutions. Intended to provide an intellectual basis for the future development of chemistry, this book is aimed at a wide readership including students, professionals, engineers, scientists, environmentalists and anyone interested in a more sustainable future.

At the Crossroads Between Nutrition and Pharmacology

Functional foods (foods with known bioactive properties) have shown potential for preventive and therapeutic treatments. However, this potential must be safely determined before they enter the commercial market. At the same time, nutrition research is transforming into a data driven field with reference to the identification and development of functional food products due to the large number of variables affecting food biochemistry in the human body. This volume presents reviews of recent advances in food chemistry, food technology and nutraceutical research (for diet therapy and cosmetics). Chapters in this volume cover a broad spectrum of topics: - drug discovery and development in the mod...

Molecular and Translational Vascular Medicine

Molecular and Translational Vascular Medicine will serve as a state-of-the-art resource for physicians and translational medical researchers alike who are interested in the rapidly evolving field of vascular medicine. The text provides new insight into the basic mechanisms of classic vascular pathophysiologic processes like angiogenesis, atherosclerosis, thrombosis, and vasculitis. Furthermore, it covers new areas of investigation including the role of the ubiquitin proteasome system in vascular disease, endothelial progenitor cells for disease treatment, and the genetic basis of thoracic aortic aneurysms. Lastly, this volume includes sections on the newly emerging field of therapeutic angio...

Cardiovascular Calcification and Bone Mineralization

The book covers the basic science and clinical aspects of cardiovascular calcification and bone mineralization. Cardiovascular calcification is the leading predictor of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, with a predictive value more significant than blood lipid levels. The presence of calcific mineral in cardiovascular tissues alters biomechanical performance, increasing workload on the heart and potentiating atherosclerotic plaque rupture and subsequent heart attack and stroke. This book examines the role of calcification in cardiovascular disease covering topics such as calcification in the atherosclerotic plaques and aortic valves arteries and valves, aortic valve replacement, peripheral artery disease, imaging of early calcification and target discovery. In addition, various forms of ectopic calcification as well as mechanisms of bone mineralization are discussed. Cardiovascular Calcification and Bone Mineralization is an essential resource for clinicians, researchers, and other medical professionals in cardiology, pathology, and biomedical engineering.

Exorcising History

It is in this way that the plays lend themselves to Graham-Jones's examination of how personal and collective histories enter into theater production, in the creation of dramatic worlds that re-create and revise the "outside" world."--BOOK JACKET.

Revolutions in Human Biospecimen Study: Leveraging new technologies to explore the pathology, therapeutics and biomarkers for atherosclerotic disease

Over the last few years, new high-throughput biotechnologies are revolutionizing our ways to utilize human biospecimens for understanding atherosclerotic disease. These recent advances allow deep profiling of individual cells at the genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics and proteomics levels, or even simultaneous detection of various combinations of ‘Omics’ in the same cell. Additionally, novel methods to integrate data at different levels from tissue sections and dissociated tissues are the emerging trends in large and institutional biobank studies. Growing literature has shown the value of such sequencing and bioinformatic strategies in shedding light on (1) how risk genes, as identified by the Genome-Wide Association Study, contribute to atherogenesis (genotype to phenotype), and (2) how features of atherosclerotic lesions affect patient response in clinical trials (phenotype to the clinical outcome). The hybrid of cutting-edge biotechnologies and bioinformatic approaches helps us maximize biobank resources to accelerate bench-to-bedside research.
