This thesis provides the first comprehensive theoretical overview of the electronic and optical properties of two dimensional (2D) Indium Selenide: atomically thin films of InSe ranging from monolayers to few layers in thickness. The thesis shows how the electronic propertes of 2D InSe vary significantly with film thickness, changing from a weakly indirect semiconductor for the monolayer to a direct gap material in the bulk form, with a strong band gap variation with film thickness predicted and recently observed in optical experiments. This book discusses the processing and properties of silicene, including the historical and theoretical background of silicene, theoretical predictions, the synthesis and experimental properties of silicene and the potential applications and further developments. The availability of nanolithographic tools and new spectroscopies (scanning tunneling microscope, mechanically controllable break junctions) has opened the possibility of directly probing the Kondo effect on the relevant mesoscopic size scale. This book brings together the major progress that has been made during the past few years on low-dimensional Kondo systems. Apart from size effects in dilute magnetic alloys, the book focuses on the two-channel Kondo effect to describe two-level systems which influence the electron transport through metallic nanobridges and cause dephasing in disordered metal films.
