Preleukemia

Clinical hematologists are frequently faced with the intriguing problem of agnogenic myelo dysplastic syndromes; these syndromes are peculiar in their failing or poor response to therapy and in that they frequently terminate in acute leukemia. An international symposium held in Innsbruck in 1978 was dedicated to clinical and pathophysiologic aspects of the preleukemic syndromes. This monograph consists of articles that correspond to the papers presented at the symposium and of the edited discussions. It was the aim of the symposium and of this monograph to outline comprehensively the pathophysiologic background of the preleukemic syndromes and to summarize the present information about their...

The Northern North Atlantic

The Northern North Atlantic

The northern North Atlantic is one of the regions most sensitive to past and present global changes. This book integrates the results of an interdisciplinary project studying the properties of the Greenland-Iceland-Norwegian Seas and the processes of pelagic and benthic particle formation, particle transport, and deposition in the deep-sea sediments. Ice-related and biogeochemical processes have been investigated to decipher the spatial and temporal variability of the production and fate of organic carbon in this region. Isotopic stratigraphy, microfossil assemblages and paleotemperatures are combined to reconstruct paleoceanographic conditions and to model past climatic changes in the Late Quaternary. The Greenland-Iceland-Norwegian Seas can now be considered one of the best studied subbasins of the world`s oceans.

Secondary Neoplasias Following Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, and Immunosuppression

Complete remissions and survival times of tumor patients are increasing steadily - and so is the risk of developing therapy-associated secondary malignancy. At the same time, we face the growing diagnostic and therapeutic problem of tumorigenesis during posttransplantation immunosuppressive therapy. The theoretical section delves into the various causes of tumorigenesis, with special chapters on secondary chemo- and/or radiotherapy-induced tumorigenesis and neoplasia occurring during posttransplantation immunosuppressive therapy. The risk of individual cytostatic agents causing secondary malignoma is covered, as are the functions and dysfunctions of immunosurveillance. The immune system’s ...

Graphene

This book is a result of contributions of experts from the international scientific community working in different aspects of graphene science and applications and reports on the state-of-the-art research and development findings on graphene through original and innovative research studies. Through its seven chapters, the reader will have access to works related to the theory and characterization of various planar heterostructures and nanoplatforms based on graphene and also the Compton effect in graphene, while it introduces photoactive graphene from functionalization to applications and also the modeling and control of a smart single-layer graphene sheet. Besides, it presents reviews on the modeling, synthesis, and properties of graphene and graphene technology and its applications in electronic devices.

The vast technological potential of nanocrystalline materials, as well as current intense interest in the physics and chemistry of nanoscale phenomena, has led to explosive growth in research on semiconductor nanocrystals, also known as nanocrystal quantum dots, and metal nanoparticles. Semiconductor and Metal Nanocrystals addresses current topics impacting the field including synthesis and assembly of nanocrystals, theory and spectroscopy of interband and intraband optical transitions, single-nanocrystal optical and tunneling spectroscopies, electrical transport in nanocrystal assemblies, and physical and engineering aspects of nanocrystal-based devices. Written by experts who have contribu...
