A Working Basis, and Other Essays (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from A Working Basis, and Other Essays If these efforts help some one to a footing on the pathway that leads to more serious ef fort and stimulate a desire for further in quiry, we are content. I have no quarrel with theology; I know none to quarrel with. What is beyond life's spectrum is a mystery to me. I do not know much of the ultra red or ultra violet either, except that there is power and force and wis dom existing there. But the play of colors be tween, with its high lights and its dark lines, I do know a little of, and I love it - just as I love our ocean down here, with its depths, its strength and its dangers, its colors and moods, its icy mountains, its trackless wastes, a...

In 'A Greek Primer for Beginners in New Testament Greek', Wallace Stearns provides a concise and practical guide for those seeking to understand the language of the New Testament. With a focus on the basics, this primer is perfect for preachers and teachers who need to refer to a dictionary or critical notes in commentaries but may have forgotten some of the language. Stearns recognizes the challenges of learning Greek and provides an easy-to-follow guide that avoids overwhelming the reader with too much information at once. While it's not suitable as a comprehensive textbook for learning the language, it's an excellent reference tool and cheat sheet for those working on translations.

For centuries scholars have recognized the apologetic character of the Hellenistic Jewish historians, Josephos, and Luke-Acts; they have not, however, adequately addressed their possible relationships to each other and to their wider cultures. In this first full systematic effort to set these authors within the framework of Greco-Roman traditions, Professor Sterling has used genre criticism as a method for locating a distinct tradition of historical writing, apologetic historiography. Apologetic historiography is the story of a subgroup of people which deliberately Hellenizes the traditions of the group in an effort to provide a self-definition within the context of the larger world. It arose as a result of a dialectic relationship with Greek ethnography. This work traces the evolution of this tradition through three major eras of eastern Mediterranean history spanning six hundred years: the Persian, the Greek, and the Roman.

This volume includes an introduction, a translation and an in-depth commentary of the fragments of the Exagoge, a Greek tragedy written by a Jewish poet named Ezekiel the Tragedian, who lived between mid- 2nd and mid-1st century BCE. The author offers an interpretation of the play which links its 17 fragments and clarifies their position in the overall structure, in order to bring to light the ideas of Ezekiel and his social and cultural context.
