In the present study indicators were developed for the sensitivity of plant species to climate change and habitat fragmentation, by analysing large databases. The resulting sensitivity scores were confronted with trends observed over the 20th century in the frequency of occurrence of species. The scores for sensitivity to climate change and habitat fragmentation can both explain part of the trends observed over the 20th century. Within the group of species that are sensitive to climate change, the highest proportion of deteriorating species was found among the subset of species with low dispersal ability. This supports the theory that the effects of climate change on biodiversity are aggravated by habitat fragmentation.

Together with PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, Wageningen Environmental Research(WEnR) is developing BioScore, a biodiversity model to assess the impact of pressures like climate change, nitrogen deposition and land use change. This report highlights the selection and pre-processing proceduresof data concerning the distribution of plant species and habitat types as used in BioScore 3.0 to derive doseresponsefunctions. More than 4,500 European plant species were selected to derive a species setrepresentative for almost all terrestrial (semi)-natural EUNIS habitat types, complemented with ten mostcommon anthropogenic vegetation types (ruderal and arable). Data on distribution of these species wereselected from the European Vegetation Archive (EVA). In total 536,900 vegetation plots, covering the 4,500plant species were extracted from the database to serve as input for BioScore 3. To assess the reliability ofenvironmental responses of plant species, as retrieved from BioScore 3, a comparison has been made withpublished ecological indicator values (Ellenberg indicator values)

Pieter Saenredam, The Utrecht Work

Pieter Saenredam (1597–1665) was one of the magical painters of 17th-century Holland, a time known as the Golden Age of Dutch Art. He spent his career immortalizing the churches of Holland in drawings and paintings. Working through a series of perspective drawings to the finished painting, he made innumerable fine adjustments to architectural details to create what may be justly called spaces of wondrous perfection of proportion and luminosity. Pieter Saenredam, The Utrecht Work is published to coincide with an exhibition of Saenredam’s drawings and paintings, originally held at the Centraal Museum, Utrecht, and on view from April 16 through July 7, 2002 at the Getty Museum. This elegant volume brings together more than sixty drawings and paintings depicting the beautiful and historically venerable churches of the Dutch city of Utrecht.
