Vladimir Sorokin’s Discourses
Vladimir Sorokin is the most prominent and the most controversial contemporary Russian writer. Having emerged as a prose writer in Moscow’s artistic underground in the late 1970s and early 80s, he became visible to a broader Russian audience only in the mid-1990s, with texts shocking the moralistic expectations of traditionally minded readers by violating not only Soviet ideological taboos, but also injecting vulgar language, sex, and violence into plots that the postmodernist Sorokin borrowed from nineteenth-century literature and Socialist Realism. Sorokin became famous when the Putin youth organization burned his books in 2002 and he picked up neo-nationalist and neo-imperialist discourses in his dystopian novels of the 2000s and 2010s, making him one of the fiercest critics of Russia’s “new middle ages,” while remaining steadfast in his dismantling of foreign discourses.
Morphology and Its Demarcations
The papers in this volume derive from the International Morphology Meeting (Vienna 2004) and were selected because they address the main topic of the conference: external and internal demarcations of morphology. The external demarcation between syntax and morphology is dealt with in the papers by Rood, Cysouw, Milicevic, Blom, Enrique-Arias, and Heine & König. Demarcations of inflection and derivation are discussed in the contributions by Ricca, Lloret, Manova, Say, aucer, and Stump. In contrast to theoretical discussions in previous literature, which have concentrated on the internal boundary between inflection and derivation, this volume attributes equal importance to the demarcations between derivation and compounding, addressed in the contributions by Bauer, Booij, tekauer, Fradin, Amiot, and Scalise, Bisetto & Guevara.
Crime Prevention and Justice in 2030
This book analyzes human rights and crime prevention challenges from the perspective of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda, in particular its goal 16 on promoting peaceful, inclusive and just societies, the creation and development of which depend on the interplay between various secular and non-secular (f)actors. The book reflects on the implementation of these two legal instruments from a “back to the future” standpoint, that is, drawing on the wisdom of contributors to the 2030 Agenda from the past and present in order to offer a constructive inter-disciplinary and intergenerational approach. The book’s intended readership includes academics and educationists, criminal justice practitioners and experts, diplomats, spiritual leaders and non-governmental actors; its goal is to encourage them to pursue a socially and human rights oriented drive for “larger freedom,” which is currently jeopardized by adverse political currents.
