The idea for this special issue arose when the Puerto Rican and Latino Studies Institute called together a small group of scholars during the Spring of 2001. Scholars presented discussions on contemporary issues facing U.S. Latinos, including topics on globalization, law, education, and communication. This collection will be of interest to scholars, educators, students, administrators, and policymakers concerned with advancing knowledge in critical education, language policy and the press, technology and education policy, selective skills in media reception, and critical analysis of popular television programming.

Historically, conventional scholars in the field of education have asserted that underachievement by Black students may be attributed to cultural deprivation and/or genetic deficiencies. Hypotheses like these have led to the proliferation of theories that Black students are inferior when compared to their White counterparts. This book is a reflective essay that challenges the paradigms used in qualitative research, both at the level of data collecting and at the eventual publishing and/or sharing of findings. In reviewing published research and witnessing presentations of data resulting from interviews, narratives, open-ended questionnaires and field notes, critical issues related to the languages and cultures of both researchers and researched, appear to be neglected. In this text, discussions of potential misunderstandings and misinterpretations, often not accounted for in reporting findings, are de-constructed and posited as potentially harmful to informing practice and policy in fields, such as education, policy design, and the social sciences. The goal of this book is to encourage explicit discussions of the impact of differences in languages and cultures of the researchers and researched in the design and practice of qualitative methods, and in the reporting of findings.
This book is about immigrant women of colour in the US and particularly in the ivory tower. Collectively, the narratives in the book strive to further the discourse regarding the multiple interrelationships of identity, culture, self, others, pedagogy, and institutions of higher education. The accounts that follow describe what it means to be a transnational student, professor, scholar, and administrator within the contested terrain of higher education. The women in this book have experienced the halls of academe in different ways, not always as faculty at a research university. The narratives are organised geographically and draw out the experiences of the third wave of immigrants coming from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean (or West Indies), and Latin America. This book brings together the multidimensional voices of immigrant women of colour to chronicle the immigrant experience in the United States.
