Evolution of Permeability and Acoustic Velocity Through Radio-Frequency Heating of Shale
Shale has been known to be a type of sedimentary rock that is ultra-tight and has an extremely low permeability. Consequently, a radio frequency heating (microwave heating) method to enhance permeability of shale sample in laboratory conditions is investigated along with supplementary acoustic experiments. Promising results have shown that for poker chip sized shale samples with low permeability in the range of 110222 to 110212 (Green River Shale and Marcellus Shale samples) treated with microwave and conventional furnace, permeability increases 2 or 3 order of magnitude for different mineralogy samples.
