Vascular Diagnostics

In the past few years, the most exciting advances have occured in vascular diagnostics. First of all, well-established techniques like ultrasound have been further refined and developed (intravascular ultrasound). Furthermore, diagnostic investigations could be linked to treatment itself. More and more interventional techniques (the most popular is still percutaneous transluminary angioplasty - PTCA) have been introduced into daily routine. Radiologists and cardiologists are working more and more together, a fact which is reflected by the international group of experts bringing here the knowledge from both fields together for the first time.

Forward Recoil Spectrometry

Forward Recoil Spectrometry

The practical properties of many materials are dominated by surface and near-surface composition and structure. An understanding of how the surface region affects material properties starts with an understanding of the elemental composition of that region. Since the most common contaminants are light elements (for example, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and hydrogen), there is a clear need for an analytic probe that simultaneously and quantitatively records elemental profiles of all light elements. Energy recoil detection using high-energy heavy ions is unique in its ability to provide quantitative profiles of light and medium mass elements. As such this method holds great promise for the study of a variety of problems in a wide range of fields. While energy recoil detection is one of the newest and most promising ion beam analytic techniques, it is also the oldest in terms of when it was first described. Before discussing recent developments in this field, perhaps it is worth reviewing the early days of this century when the first energy recoil detection experiments were reported.

Advances in Cardiology

This book presents the most recent advances in the field of cardiology, with emphasis on cardiovascular pathophysiology and new diagnostic and therapeutic techniques used for the management of patients with cardiovascular disease. Divided into ten sections, the book examines different aspects in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease, including key advances in interventional cardiology, innovations in technology, and advances in pharmacotherapy. Implantable cardiac devices and atrial fibrillation are discussed in depth. Edited by internationally recognised Professor Kanu Chatterjee from the University of Iowa and the University of California San Francisco; and Professor Phillip A Horwitz from the University of Iowa, this comprehensive reference includes nearly 350 images and illustrations to enhance learning. Key points Comprehensive guide presenting recent advances in cardiology Emphasis on pathophysiology and new diagnostic and therapeutic techniques In depth coverage of implantable cardiac devices and atrial fibrillation Edited by internationally recognised US experts, Prof Kanu Chatterjee and Prof Phillip A Horwitz

Developments in Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

Over the past few decades, exciting developments have taken place in the field of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). This has been enabled by the advent of robust Fourier transform interferometers and diode array solutions, coupled with complex chemometric methods that can easily be executed using modern microprocessors. The present edited volume intends to cover recent developments in NIRS and provide a broad perspective of some of the challenges that characterize the field. The volume comprises six chapters overall and covers several sectors. The target audience for this book includes engineers, practitioners, and researchers involved in NIRS system design and utilization in different applications. We believe that they will greatly benefit from the timely and accurate information provided in this work.

Diffusion in metals is an important phenomenon, which has many applications, for example in all kinds of steel and aluminum production, and in alloy formation (technical applications e.g. in superconductivity and semiconductor science). In this book the data on diffusion in metals are shown, both in graphs and in equations. Reliable data on diffusion in metals are required by researchers who try to make sense of results from all kinds of metallurgical experiments, and they are equally needed by theorists and computer modelers. The previous compilation dates from 1990, and measurements relying on the electron microprobe and the recent Rutherford backscattering technique were hardly taken into account there. This reference book, containing all results on self-diffusion and impurity diffusion in pure metals with an indication of their reliability, will be useful to everyone in this field for the theory, fundamental research and industrial applications covered. • Up-to-date and complete (including EPMA and RBS investigations) • Indication of reliability of the measurements • Reassessment of many early results • Data can easily be extracted from Tables and Graphs
