Disasters and the Quality of Life
This volume presents and analyses unique empirical data from countries hit by floods, earthquakes, bio-infections (including COVID-19), technological catastrophes, migrations and mobilities, and other social effects, in order to provide a model of ethnological research on disasters of different types. Special attention is given to their role in the communities’ quality of life. The book introduces an analytical contribution to adequate policy for the prevention of disasters, response and liquidation of their consequences and restoring quality of life.
Migration from and towards Bulgaria 1989–2011
After the fall of communism in 1989 Bulgaria experiences strong waves of emigration. According to recent estimations, about 2 million Bulgarians live abroad. Since 1989, migration flows often have changed their direction, intensity and patterns; however, their main characteristic remains their constancy. The articles in the present collection describe and analyze some of the largest Bulgarian communities abroad as well as other topics related to migration issues of ethnic minorities in Bulgaria or the multilingualism in the works of Bulgarian authors with migratory background.

Islamophobia in European Cities
The demise of socialism in Southeast Europe coincided with the breakout of wars and genocidal violence against local Muslim populations. After being displaced and forced to migrate to different European countries, those former socialist citizens quickly developed institutions of sociability and unobtrusively enacted postulates of solidarity. This book brings a spotlight on the “generations after” born to Balkan Muslim families whose repatriation could not take place due to the continuous political instability and insecurity in their homelands. It investigates the new modes of these “second generations” to respond to the current crisis of liberal democracy and rampant Islamophobia in their places of residence. By relating spatial issues to broader religious and political questions, this study shines a light on the civic engagement, religious practices and political sensitivities of young Muslims with Balkan roots in Belgium, Germany, Italy and Poland. The book will be of interest to academics, researchers and policy-makers working in the areas of Islamic Studies, Migration Studies, Anthropology of Religion and Memory Studies.
Coming To, and Staying In, the Poorest Country in the EU
This book is a multi-layered scientific study of the immigrants who have come to Bulgaria since 1990 – specifically, their patterns of movement, settlement, social networks, identity dynamics, integration and adaptation, their impact on the social environment, and changes in the cultural specifics. Until recently, studies on immigration in Bulgaria have mainly been oriented towards particular communities within the framework of ethnic studies. The chapters in this volume do not ignore immigrants’ ethnicity and origins, but their main focus is reasons for migration, be they economic, educational, political, marital, or lifestyle-based. The book examines several important factors of settlement in Bulgaria: interaction between the local population and immigrants, stereotypes and attitudes towards the newcomers, as well as the influence of local, kinship, and social networks and contacts.

Boyash Studies: Researching “Our People”
The Boyash, also known as Rudari, Lingurari or, inclusively, as “oamenii noștri” (our people), are an ethnic group living today in scattered communities in the Balkans, Central and Eastern Europe, but also in the Americas. What brings the disperse communities of Boyash together is their Romanian mother tongue, (memory of) traditional occupation, common historical origin, and the fact that the majority population considers them Gypsies / Roma. A marginal topic until now, at the crossroads between Romani and Romanian studies, the Boyash studies are today an interdisciplinary field dealing with the experiences of the Boyash over time, in Romania and all the places where they have settled. The editors of this volume intend to mark two centuries of scholarly interest in the Boyash by bringing together researchers from different fields, summing up existing literature and bringing new research to the forefront.
Ivo Papazov’s Balkanology
