The Family Novel
This book is a comparative study of the family novel as a distinctive literary genre. It concentrates on three prototypical family novels, the Chinese trilogy, The Turbulent Trilogy (1906-1940) by Pa Chin; the British trilogy, The Forsyte Saga (1906-1921) by John Galsworthy; and the French novel, Les Thibault (1922-1940) by Roger Martin du Gard. The book argues for the establishment of a new generic category, the Family Novel as a sub-genre of the novel. It describes the four distinctive characteristics; its realism and use of chronology; its sense of ritual and community; the centrality of family conflict; and its unique form.

Offspring Fictions: Salman Rushdie’s Family Novels is the first book-length study that examines families and especially the parent-child relationship in Rushdie’s core works. It argues that Sigmund Freud’s concept of the family and the author’s variations thereon are central to a full understanding of the four novels Midnight’s Children, Shame, the controversial The Satanic Verses and The Moor’s Last Sigh, a quasi-sequel to Rushdie’s first success. Configuring Memory in Czech Family Sagas: The Art of Forgetting in Generic Tradition explores how literature may configure family memory. Family sagas can be viewed as a structure helping us to share our memories. Special attention will be paid to crucial generic motifs within family sagas, as well as to elements of the narrative structure, which hold powerful memory-forming potential. The book proves that this potential can be fulfilled in two ways. The genre under analysis tends to strengthen the “bad family memory” and consider it as a burden, and to encourage one to forget their family past. Despite the prevalence of the saga as a cultural form right across mass media, the literary genre of the family saga has not attracted intensive critical acclaim. Readers of this book will not only learn more about the genre of family saga but also be encouraged to reflect on their own family memories.
John Galsworthy’s Compassion
This book discusses John Galsworthy’s compassion for people and animals, in his fiction, non-fiction and drama. Initial chapters explore compassion in The Forsyte Saga and The Modern Comedy, and his parents’ influence. Other chapters examine his works helping prison reform, men and children disabled during the First World War, and people whose relatives were interned as war-time alien enemies. Two chapters focus on slum clearance and labour unrest during the twentieth century’s first three decades. Another two concentrate on animal welfare and vivisection. The final chapter attempts to appraise Galsworthy as a writer by looking at what commentators past and present have said, and at what constitutes literature.

Trauma and Dissociation in the Works and Life of Sebastian Barry

Dr. Niko Pomakis has studied Philosophy and English at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) and University College Dublin. He earned his PhD in English Literature at the FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg.
'ReCapricorning' the Atlantic
This special issue of Luso-Brazilian Review includes articles on the Lusophone South Atlantic by historians of Africa and Brazil originally presented in May of 2006 at the Michigan State University and University of Michigan’s Atlantic History Workshop “ReCapricorning the Atlantic: Luso-Brazilian and Luso-African Perspectives on the Atlantic World.” Workshop participants set out to “ReCapricorn the Atlantic” by assessing how new research on the Lusophone South Atlantic modifies, challenges, or confirms major trends and paradigms in the expanding scholarship on Atlantic History.
Chanting the Medicine Buddha Sutra
