The Encyclopedia of Curriculum Studies provides a comprehensive introduction to the academic field of curriculum studies for the scholar, student, teacher, and administrator. The study of curriculum, beginning in the early 20th century, served primarily the areas of school administration and teaching and was seen as a method to design and develop programs of study. The field subsequently expanded to draw upon disciplines from the arts, humanities, and social sciences and to examine larger educational forces and their effects upon the individual, society, and conceptions of knowledge. Curriculum studies has now emerged to embrace an expansive and contested conception of academic scholarship w...
As the cost of high-throughput sequencing goes down, huge volumes of biological and medical data have been produced from various sequencing platforms at multiple molecular levels including genome, transcriptome, proteome, epigenome, metabolome, and so on. For a long time, data analysis on single molecular levels has paved the way to answer many important research questions. However, many Aging-Related Neuronal Diseases (ARNDs) and Central Nervous System (CNS) aging involve interactions of molecules from multiple molecular levels, in which conclusions based on single molecular levels are usually incomplete and sometimes misleading. In these scenarios, multi-omics data analysis has unprecedent...
With the gradual aging of the population, neurological disorders, including stroke, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, etc., are causing increasing distress and may even cause the loss of ability to perform activities of daily living. These disorders are generally progressive. Once onset, they may affect the entire life span with subsequent functional impairments such as motor impairment, speech impairment, swallowing impairment, sensory impairment, and cognitive impairment. Rehabilitation therapy is essential for the dysfunction caused by such disorders. Proper rehabilitation programs can improve or compensate for patients' dysfunction, and thus facilitate the restoration of their ability to daily living, help them return to social life, and reduce family and social stress.
This book presents the scholarship of Miriam Ben-Peretz, a pioneering female professor and university leader who held the highest academic honors in Israel and was an American Educational Research Fellow and a member of the National Academy of Education in the United States. With opening comments by F. Michael Connelly and an Afterword by Lee Shulman, the volume shows how Miriam Ben-Peretz continued in the academic footsteps of her advisor, Seymour Fox (Hebrew University), and his advisor, Joseph J. Schwab (University of Chicago), who also supervised Connelly and Shulman. Some book chapters reflect the influence of Miriam Ben-Peretz’s academic lineage; some others, instead, feature her signature research; and the final chapters capture her advocacy work with the MOFET Institute, a consortium of Israeli colleges of education created by the Ministry of Education that focuses on research, curriculum, and program development for teacher educators.
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 23rd International Symposium on High Performance Computing Systems and Applications, HPCS 2009, held in Kingston, Canada, in June 2009. The 29 revised full papers presented - fully revised to incorporate reviewers' comments and discussions at the symposium - were carefully selected for inclusion in the book. The papers are organized in topical sections on turbulence, materials and life sciences, bringing HPC to industry, computing science, mathematics, and statistics, as well as HPC systems and methods.
