The Vortex State
One of the most spectacular consequences of the description of the superfluid condensate in superfluid He or in superconductors as a single macroscopic quantum state is the quantization of circulation, resulting in quantized vortex lines. This book draws no distinction between superfluid He3 and He4 and superconductors. The reader will find the essential introductory chapters and the most recent theoretical and experimental progress in our understanding of the vortex state in both superconductors and superfluids, from lectures given by leading experts in the field, both experimentalists and theoreticians, who gathered in Cargèse for a NATO ASI. The peculiar features related to short coherence lengths, 2D geometry, high temperatures, disorder, and pinning are thoroughly discussed.
Nanotechnology Research Directions for Societal Needs in 2020
This volume presents a comprehensive perspective on the global scientific, technological, and societal impact of nanotechnology since 2000, and explores the opportunities and research directions in the next decade to 2020. The vision for the future of nanotechnology presented here draws on scientific insights from U.S. experts in the field, examinations of lessons learned, and international perspectives shared by participants from 35 countries in a series of high-level workshops organized by Mike Roco of the National Science Foundation (NSF), along with a team of American co-hosts that includes Chad Mirkin, Mark Hersam, Evelyn Hu, and several other eminent U.S. scientists. The study performed in support of the U.S. National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) aims to redefine the R&D goals for nanoscale science and engineering integration and to establish nanotechnology as a general-purpose technology in the next decade. It intends to provide decision makers in academia, industry, and government with a nanotechnology community perspective of productive and responsible paths forward for nanotechnology R&D.
The Gap Symmetry and Fluctuations in High-Tc Superconductors
Since the discovery in 1986 of high temperature superconductors by J. G. Bednorz and K. A. Müller, a considerable progress has been made and several important scientific problems have emerged. Within this NATO Advanced Study Institute our intention was to focus mainly on the controversial topic of the symmetry of the superconducting gap and given the very short coherence length, the role of fluctuations. The Institute on ‘The Gap Symmetry and Fluctuations in High- Superconductors’ took place in the “Institut d’Etudes Scientifiques de Cargèse” in Corsica, France, between 1 - 13 September 1997. The 110 participantsfrom 18 countries (yet 30 nationalities) including 23 full time lecturers, have spent two memorable weeks in this charming Mediterranean resort. All lecturers were asked to prepare pedagogical papers to clearly present the central physical idea behind specific model or experiment. The better understanding of physics of high temperature superconductivity is certainly needed to guide the development of applications of these materials in high and weak current devices.
Condensed Matter Theories
The orientation and physical context of the CMT Series of Workshops have always been cross-disciplinary, but with an emphasis placed on the common concerns of theorists applying many-particle concepts in diverse areas of physics. In this spirit, CMT33 chose to focus special attention on exotic fermionic and bosonic systems, quantum magnets and their quantum and thermal phase transitions, novel condensed matter systems for renewable energy sources, the physics of nanosystems and nanotechnology, and applications of molecular dynamics and density functional theory.
De kracht van wetenschap
Eerste publicatie over de geschiedenis van de Dienst Onderzoekscoördinatie en het onderzoeksbeleid aan de KU Leuven In 2016 vierde de Dienst Onderzoekscoördinatie van de Leuvense universiteit zijn dertigste verjaardag. De geschiedenis van deze door de gereputeerde geneticus Herman Vanden Berghe opgerichte dienst, die de voorbije decennia een sterke expansie beleefde, fungeert in dit boek als kapstok voor een ruimer verhaal over het onderzoeksbeleid aan de Leuvense universiteit. Daarbij gaat het onder meer over het streven naar excellentie, over de stimulansen voor interdisciplinair onderzoek, over de opkomst van de bibliometrie, over de uitbouw van een open access-beleid, over de groeiende aandacht voor wetenschappelijke integriteit, over verdeelsleutels en supercomputers, rankings en publicatiedruk, peer review en tenure track. Dit alles wordt besproken tegen de achtergrond van het Vlaamse, Belgische en Europese wetenschapsbeleid en met oog voor de internationale ontwikkelingen op het vlak van onderzoek en onderzoeksmanagement.
