Tax compliance and representation in Zambia’s informal economy
What drives tax compliance among informal workers and does it affect demands for political representation? While these questions have been posed previously in political economy scholarship, there are few studies that examine these dynamics among informal workers, who constitute the majority of the population in developing countries. Zambia's Youths and the 2021 General Election
In Zambia’s Youths and the 2021 General Election: Rescuing Democracy through Activism and Social Media, Emmanuel Matambo examines democracy in Zambia and shows how Zambia’s youth voters became the central focus during the 2021 election. Matambo analyzes the importance of social media leading up to the election, as well as the role of music, youth protests, and the youths influence on registered voters, that allowed for the end of the Patriotic Front’s (PF) decade in power. Through interviews and qualitative data, he highlights the outspokenness and activism of the youth and how they went above and beyond to ensure that the United Party for National Development (UPND) won the election. Further, this book argues that the large number of votes for the UPND during the election was not due to enthusiastic support from the voters, but rather was a rejection of the PF and was support for the party that had the most chance of ousting the PF. Matambo provides a detailed discussion of Zambia’s 2021 election and reflects on the power of the youth vote.
A Description of the Perceptions of the Principals and Climates of Zambia's 'Effective' Schools
The study was in response to the pressing quest for educational qualitative improvement in Zambia. An alternative qualitative method to school improvement is suggested. The study describes and examines the administrative and leadership characteristics and climates of five Zambian secondary schools designated and nominated by the Ministry of General Education and Culture as successful schools. Interviews and questionnaires administered to headteachers and teachers were used for data collection. Content and item analysis in the interviews and questionnaire responses were used. The findings are not consistent in all the five schools investigated with the literature on effective schools. No school covered was perceived favourably in all the five dimensions tested. Appropriate recommendations are made for policy makers, practitioners and stake holders.
A Look at Zambia’s Road Financing Strategies: The Impact of Incongruent Policies and Budgets
There are various reasons why the road asset in Zambia has been deteriorating over the past five decades since independence. Much effort to restore the road asset to its original value and keep it maintained in a good and safe condition was initiated in mid 1990s with the launch of the Road Sector Investment Plan – Phase I, which was immediately followed by the launch of a Phase II to run from 2003 to 2013.
