It aims to illustrate how Chinese society and its creative writing have supported, competed and fought with each other for the past 40 years and more. Much of what is revealed here is mundane, but the pressure of bringing art to social and political causes, indeed the universal pressure to survive, forges this collection into a very human document. The strengths and weaknesses of these essays offer a window on those of modern Chinese literature itself. Realism was the favoured literary doctrine of the day, and, reflecting this, most of these essays speak for themselves - about war, revolution, betrayal and commitment.

The aim of the Selective Guide is to facilitate the first stage of research for those interested in Chinese literature between 1900 and 1949. It provides the reader with basic information on more than 300 words by Chinese writers. The contributions are based on independent research of sinologists from numerous countries. The guide consists of four volumes, which deal with the novel, the short story, the poem, and the drama (the current volume) respectively. Each volume contains an introduction which surveys the development of the particular genre and its characteristics in the period covered. All entries contain bibliographical information, summary of content and appraisal of the work as well as references to secondary sources and translations.

Banished to the Great Northern Wilderness
Following Mao Zedong’s Anti-Rightist Campaign of 1957–58, Chinese intellectuals were subjected to “re-education” by the state. In Banished to the Great Northern Wilderness, Ning Wang draws on labour farm archives, interviews, and memoirs to provide a remarkable look at the suffering and complex psychological world of banished Beijing intellectuals. Wang’s use of these newly uncovered Chinese-language sources challenges the concept of the intellectual as renegade martyr – showing how exiles often declared allegiance to the state for self-preservation. While Mao’s campaign victimized the banished, many of those same people also turned against their comrades. Wang describes the ways in which the state sought to remould the intellectuals, and he illuminates the strategies the exiles used to deal with camp officials and improve their chances of survival.
