Minority Students in Special and Gifted Education

Special education and gifted and talented programs were designed for children whose educational needs are not well met in regular classrooms. From their inceptions, these programs have had disproportionate representation of racial and ethnic minority students. What causes this disproportion? Is it a problem? Minority Students in Special and Gifted Education considers possible contributors to that disparity, including early biological and environmental influences and inequities in opportunities for preschool and K-12 education, as well as the possibilities of bias in the referral and assessment system that leads to placement in special programs. It examines the data on early childhood experie...

This book provides a comprehensive review of mental health topics for pre- and postsurgical patients. The book discusses general aspects of psychiatric care during the immediate pre- and postsurgical phase, such as pain management, psychopharmacological management or legal aspects of informed consent. The volume dedicates one section to specific subspecialties, including cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, organ transplantation, plastic surgery, bariatric surgery, and many others. Each of these chapters address preoperative psychiatric risk factors, evaluations, impact, and management recommendations for prevention and treatment of the most common psychiatric complications. The final section reviews the current dilemmas and questions for future research in this field, including delirium and capacity evaluation. The text concludes with commentary written by experts in the fields of consultation-liaison psychiatry and surgery on future directions and considerations. Perioperative Psychiatry is a valuable resource for psychiatrists, psychologists, surgeons, trainees, nurses, social workers, and all medical professionals concerned with the behavioral health of surgical patients.

Perception Metaphors

Metaphor allows us to think and talk about one thing in terms of another, ratcheting up our cognitive and expressive capacity. It gives us concrete terms for abstract phenomena, for example, ideas become things we can grasp or let go of. Perceptual experience—characterised as physical and relatively concrete—should be an ideal source domain in metaphor, and a less likely target. But is this the case across diverse languages? And are some sensory modalities perhaps more concrete than others? This volume presents critical new data on perception metaphors from over 40 languages, including many which are under-studied. Aside from the wealth of data from diverse languages—modern and historical; spoken and signed—a variety of methods (e.g., natural language corpora, experimental) and theoretical approaches are brought together. This collection highlights how perception metaphor can offer both a bedrock of common experience and a source of continuing innovation in human communication.

Bountiful Empire

This meticulously researched, beautiful volume offers fresh and lively insight into an empire and cuisine that until recent decades has been too narrowly viewed through orientalist spectacles. The Ottoman Empire was one of the largest and longest-lasting empires in history—and one of the most culinarily inclined. In this powerful and complex concoction of politics, culture, and cuisine, the production and consumption of food reflected the lives of the empire’s citizens from sultans to soldiers. Food bound people of different classes and backgrounds together, defining identity and serving symbolic functions in the social, religious, political, and military spheres. In Bountiful Empire, Pr...
