Probing Correlated Quantum Many-Body Systems at the Single-Particle Level

How much knowledge can we gain about a physical system and to what degree can we control it? In quantum optical systems, such as ion traps or neutral atoms in cavities, single particles and their correlations can now be probed in a way that is fundamentally limited only by the laws of quantum mechanics. In contrast, quantum many-body systems pose entirely new challenges due to the enormous number of microscopic parameters and their small length- and short time-scales. This thesis describes a new approach to probing quantum many-body systems at the level of individual particles: Using high-resolution, single-particle-resolved imaging and manipulation of strongly correlated atoms, single atoms can be detected and manipulated due to the large length and time-scales and the precise control of internal degrees of freedom. Such techniques lay stepping stones for the experimental exploration of new quantum many-body phenomena and applications thereof, such as quantum simulation and quantum information, through the design of systems at the microscopic scale and the measurement of previously inaccessible observables.

Goals and Economic Instruments for the Achievement of Global Warming Mitigation in Europe

Climate change poses important challenges to research and policy. Within three decades, an issue that was initially confined to the attention of a few scientists became the topic of large-scale research programmes, national and European policies and an international Convention. While significant uncertainties remain on the timing and scale of the changes to be expected and of their impacts, an appreci ation emerged of the high ecological, economic, political and social stakes involved and lead to governmental, business and citizens' initiatives. After focusing on the understanding of climate processes and the possible impacts of climate change on ecosystems, European research - and international research more generally - started addressing also the social, economic and policy causes of and responses to climate change. In the meantime, local, national and European measures started being developed to mitigate carbon dioxide emissions, a European target was agreed to achieve the stabilization of carbon dioxide by 2000 at the levels of 1990, the Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC) was adopted and was followed by its Kyoto Protocol.

My last 10 years in the high Sierra mountains. I started as somebody who knew nothing of mountaineering, backpacking or photography. Just an appetite for adventure and wanting to see beautiful places. That part never changed. My skills as a mountaineer and photographer evolved to more serious levels over the decade. I found the mountains to be works of art. And through art, I saw intentionality. Through intentionality, I found meaning. A meaning that revealed to me that existence is more than the sum of our parts.

This book contains some selected papers from the International Conference on Extreme Learning Machine 2014, which was held in Singapore, December 8-10, 2014. This conference brought together the researchers and practitioners of Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) from a variety of fields to promote research and development of “learning without iterative tuning”. The book covers theories, algorithms and applications of ELM. It gives the readers a glance of the most recent advances of ELM.

Practical Applications in Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical Engineering is an exciting and emerging interdisciplinary field that combines engineering with life sciences. The relevance of this area can be perceived in our everyday lives every time we go to hospital, receive medical treatment or even when we buy health products such as an automatic blood pressure monitor device. Over the past years we have experienced a great technological development in health care and this is due to the joint work of engineers, mathematicians, physicians, computer scientists and many other professionals. This book introduces a collection of papers organized into three sections that provide state of the art examples of practical applications in Biomedical Engineering in the area of Biomedical Signal Processing and Modelling, Biomaterials and Prosthetic Devices, and Biomedical Image Processing.

Aesthetics and Functionality in Ear Reconstruction

Ear reconstruction has developed from the sole plastic reconstruction of the auricle to a more complex procedure that includes the functional rehabilitation of hearing. For the patient's benefit the number of surgeries could be reduced to two or three while still maintaining excellent results. This development is due to improvements in surgical procedures as well as technical developments such as bone-anchored hearing aids or cochlear implants. The authors of this volume have considered different aspects of reconstruction of severe ear malformation. Developments in surgery and the choice of prosthetic materials are closely examined, and the benefits of alloplastic materials in comparison to ...

Homo Oeconomicus

The economic model of behaviour is fundamental not only in economic theory, but also in modern approaches of other social sciences, above all in political science and law. This book provides a comprehensive treatise of the general model, its philosophical and methodological foundations and its applications in different fields. In addition to the basic model, extensions to its assumptions are examined to account for complex applications like low-cost situations with moral behaviour.
