The essays in this volume are informed by a variety of theoretical assumptions and of critical methodologies, but they all share an interest in the intersections of word and image in a variety of media. This unifying rationale secures the present collection's central position in the current critical context, defined as it predominantly is by ways of reading that are based on a relational nexus. The intertextual, the intermedial, the intersemiotic are indeed foregrounded and combined in these essays, conceptually as much as in the critical practices favoured by the various contributions. Nascido em 1883, no ano da publicação de Assim Falou Zaratustra e da morte do compositor alemão Richard Wagner, o jornalista e diplomata Augusto de Castro viria a deparar-se na vida, como o próprio afirmou mais tarde, com “deliciosas ironias”. Assim, enquanto Zaratustra pertenceu a um dos autores mais apreciados por Benito Mussolini – ditador italiano de quem Castro foi admirador confesso no decorrer das primeiras décadas do século xx e nascido, também ele, em 1883 –, já o desaparecimento do criador de Parsifal, deu o mote para um dos artigos mais nostálgicos de Augusto de Castro, que intitulou a sua penúltima obra, Há oitenta e três anos em Veneza (1966).Nesta obra propõe-se uma viagem pela vida de Augusto de Castro, figura marcante da vida diplomática, política e cultural do século XX português, que acompanhou de perto as principais mudanças vivenciadas pelo país e que privou com alguns dos principais atores políticos, económicos e culturais da cena nacional e internacional do seu tempo.
Convict Labor in the Portuguese Empire, 1740-1932
Forced convict labor provided the Portuguese with solutions to the growing criminal population at home and the lack of infrastructure in Angola and Mozambique. In Convict Labor in the Portuguese Empire, Timothy J. Coates examines the role of large numbers of convicts in Portuguese Africa from 1800 until 1932. This work examines the numbers, rationale, and realities of convict labor (largely) in Angola during this period, but Mozambique is a secondary area, as well as late colonial times in Brazil. This is a unique, first study of an experiment in convict labor in Africa directed by a European power; it will be welcomed by scholars of Africa and New Imperialism, as well as those interested in law and labor.
