Peoples, Nature and Environments

This volume brings together perspectives from scholars of different scientific backgrounds endeavouring to understand and debate the interactions and relationships between humans, nonhuman species and natural ecosystems in order to overcome the classic human/environment dichotomy. Through discussions informed by the humanities, arts, social and natural sciences, the book deals with the way different disciplines approach this relationship. These diverse perspectives are compared to enable a cross-cutting analysis of human/nature interface throughout history. Changes forced by the utilization of resources and habitats, as well as climate changes are analysed and discussed, enhancing the importance of a multifaceted approach for a better understanding of the complexity of both the human/world relationship and diverse interspecies connections and impacts.

Disaster in the Early Modern World

How did early modern societies think about disasters, such as earthquakes or floods? How did they represent disaster, and how did they intervene to mitigate its destructive effects? This collection showcases the breadth of new work on the period ca. 1300-1750. Covering topics that range from new thinking about risk and securitisation to the protection of dikes from shipworm, and with a geography that extends from Europe to Spanish America, the volume places early modern disaster studies squarely at the intersection of intellectual, cultural and socio-economic history. This period witnessed fresh speculation on nature, the diffusion of disaster narratives and imagery and unprecedented attempts to control the physical world. The book will be essential to specialists and students of environmental history and disaster, as well as general readers who seek to discover how pre-industrial societies addressed some of the same foundational issues we grapple with today.

News from the Epicentre

For decades historians argued for the downfall of communication, when early modern societies were hit by a natural disaster. After all, earthquakes caused the destruction of infrastructure, which hindered the spread of news. Instead, the last investigations opened a new point of view about the political communication: every crisis was a catalyst for news. The book widens this reading through a comparative analysis of several earthquakes in the Hispanic Monarchy territories, from Asia to America. However, the examination of communications provided in this volume is not an end in itself but is offered as a basis for reflection and to propose the notion that earthquakes trigger change in social...

Hyperborder

Roving vigilantes, fear-mongering politicians, hysterical pundits, and the looming shadow of a seven hundred-mile-long fence: the US–Mexican border is one of the most complex and dynamic areas on the planet today. Hyperborder provides the most nuanced portrait yet of this dynamic region. Author Fernando Romero presents a multidisciplinary perspective informed by interviews with numerous academics, researchers, and organizations. Provocatively designed in the style of other kinetic large-scale studies like Rem Koolhaas's Content and Bruce Mau’s Massive Change, Hyperborder is an exhaustively researched report from the front lines of the border debate.

Advances in Design Engineering III

This book contains the papers presented at the XXXI International Congress INGEGRAF “Graphic Expression: reunion, reflection, representation,” held on June 29–30 and July 1, 2021, in Málaga, Spain. It reports on cutting-edge topics in product design and manufacturing, such as industrial methods for integrated product and process design, innovative design and computer-aided design. Further topics covered include virtual simulation and reverse engineering, additive manufacturing, product manufacturing, engineering methods in medicine and education, representation techniques and nautical, engineering and construction, aeronautics and aerospace design and modeling. The book is divided into six main sections, reflecting the focus and primary themes of the conference. The contributions presented here provide researchers, engineers and experts in a range of industrial engineering subfields with extensive information to support their daily work; but also they are intended to stimulate new research directions, advanced applications of the methods discussed and future interdisciplinary collaborations.

Intelligent Data Engineering and Automated Learning – IDEAL 2023

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 24th International Conference on Intelligent Data Engineering and Automated Learning, IDEAL 2023, held in Évora, Portugal, during November 22–24, 2023. The 45 full papers and 4 short papers presented in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 77 submissions. IDEAL 2023 is focusing on big data challenges, machine learning, deep learning, data mining, information retrieval and management, bio-/neuro-informatics, bio-inspired models, agents and hybrid intelligent systems, and real-world applications of intelligence techniques and AI. The papers are organized in the following topical sections: main track; special session on federated learning and (pre) aggregation in machine learning; special session on intelligent techniques for real-world applications of renewable energy and green transport; and special session on data selection in machine learning.
