Peoples, Nature and Environments
This volume brings together perspectives from scholars of different scientific backgrounds endeavouring to understand and debate the interactions and relationships between humans, nonhuman species and natural ecosystems in order to overcome the classic human/environment dichotomy. Through discussions informed by the humanities, arts, social and natural sciences, the book deals with the way different disciplines approach this relationship. These diverse perspectives are compared to enable a cross-cutting analysis of human/nature interface throughout history. Changes forced by the utilization of resources and habitats, as well as climate changes are analysed and discussed, enhancing the importance of a multifaceted approach for a better understanding of the complexity of both the human/world relationship and diverse interspecies connections and impacts.
Disaster in the Early Modern World
How did early modern societies think about disasters, such as earthquakes or floods? How did they represent disaster, and how did they intervene to mitigate its destructive effects? This collection showcases the breadth of new work on the period ca. 1300-1750. Covering topics that range from new thinking about risk and securitisation to the protection of dikes from shipworm, and with a geography that extends from Europe to Spanish America, the volume places early modern disaster studies squarely at the intersection of intellectual, cultural and socio-economic history. This period witnessed fresh speculation on nature, the diffusion of disaster narratives and imagery and unprecedented attempts to control the physical world. The book will be essential to specialists and students of environmental history and disaster, as well as general readers who seek to discover how pre-industrial societies addressed some of the same foundational issues we grapple with today.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 24th International Conference on Intelligent Data Engineering and Automated Learning, IDEAL 2023, held in Évora, Portugal, during November 22–24, 2023. Economía, Política y Sociedad en Iberoamérica (siglos XVI-XIX)
El libro contiene las ponencias presentadas en las dos primeras ediciones del Seminario Internacional de Jóvenes Investigadores en Historia Moderna, celebradas en la Universidad de Alicante, bajo la dirección de Adrián García Torres, Rosa Tribaldos Soriano y la Mar García Arenas y con el fundamental apoyo del Área de Historia Moderna de dicha universidad. Los trabajos contenidos en esta obra, suponen una muestra del esfuerzo que en los últimos años se está realizando por parte de una nueva generación de modernistas, todos ellos procedentes de diferentes universidades públicas españolas punteras durante años en las líneas de investigación que en estas desarrollan. Como resultado, nos encontramos con una contribución que abraza tanto el territorio de la Península Ibérica como la América hispana y ofrece nuevos enfoques en materia de historia política, social, económica, eclesiástica y de género.
Riesgo climático y desastres en tierras meridionales valencianas durante el siglo XVIII
El Levante peninsular ha sido considerado un territorio de riesgo debido a sus características climáticas y naturales. El presente estudio analiza el impacto socioeconómico que las sequías y las lluvias torrenciales tuvieron en el sur alicantino durante el siglo XVIII, así como su relación con el comportamiento de la Pequeña Edad del Hielo y sus diferentes oscilaciones. Un especial interés también recae en el papel que la ciencia y la técnica tuvieron durante el reformismo ilustrado con el fin de hacer frente a estas dos amenazas hidrometeorológicas. De este modo, se examinan los planes que existieron para aumentar los recursos de riego y el abastecimiento potable, al igual que las complicadas reconstrucciones y los deseos de proteger las poblaciones tras un evento de inundación. Igual importancia se le dedica al papel que la religiosidad popular tuvo a través de la celebración de rogativas con la misión de que llegaran las precipitaciones a los cultivos o que estas cesaran ante el peligro de anegamiento.
