All but buried for most of the twentieth century, the concept of altruism has re-emerged in this last quarter as a focus of intense scholarly inquiry and general public interest. In the wake of increased consciousness of the human potential for destructiveness, both scholars and the general public are seeking interventions which will not only inhibit the process, but may in fact chart a new creative path toward a global community. Largely initiated by a group of pioneering social psychologists, early questions on altruism centered on its motivation and development primarily in the context of contrived laboratory experiments. Although publications on the topic have been considerable over the ...

The Belgian architecture firm Conix was founded in 1979 and has, in nearly three decades led by Christine Conix, architect Sylvie Bruyninckx and interior designer An Steylaerts, grown to a staff of 55. No other firm is as widely represented along the quays of Antwerp, but that accomplishment doesn't convey the exceptional diversity of their projects, both residential and business. In recent years, Conix has received a great deal of international attention for one project in particular: the just-completed renovation of the midcentury design landmark, the Atomium, in Brussels, a replica of an atom that stands more than 300 feet high, with a different space in each 60-foot sphere, from a children's museum to a restaurant. "Conix Architecten" features an exceptionally sleek interior design and the book's pages are even edged in silver. With special emphasis on the Atomium, it features a selection of outstanding recent projects in 200 illustrations.

In the late Middle Ages and the Early Modern period, Northern Europe was a crucible of political, maritime and economic activity. Ships from ports all around the Baltic Sea as well as from the Low Countries plied the Baltic waters, triggering market integration, migration flows, nautical innovations and the dissemination of cultural values. This archival guide is an essential research tool for scholars studying these Baltic connections, providing descriptions of almost 1000 archival collections concerning trade, shipping, merchants, commodities, diplomacy, finances and migration in the years 1450-1800. These rich and varied sources kept at more than 100 repositories in Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia and Sweden are herewith collected for the first time.

A call for change in healthcare thinking, Healthcare in Transition explores the fundamental currents and tensions behind recent trends in policy, such as shared decision making, coproduction, and personalization. While these trends are often discussed in connection with a transition in epidemiological thought, Alan Cribb argues that they instead embody a philosophical shift--a change in our conception of healthcare and of appropriate forms of knowledge and analysis. As clinical concerns are increasingly nested within social concerns, policy analysis must engage with the multiple philosophical tensions that are now at the heart of the healthcare debate. Cribb's focus on these key, underlying ideas could not be more timely. Accessibly written and with international relevance, Healthcare in Transition will help fuel a shift from a delivery model of healthcare to a deliberative one.
