As a generalization of simple correspondence analysis, multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) is a powerful technique for handling larger, more complex datasets, including the high-dimensional categorical data often encountered in the social sciences, marketing, health economics, and biomedical research. Until now, however, the literature on the su
Written by experts with extensive clinical and scientific experience, this comprehensive textbook presents the state of the art in auditory evoked potentials. Opening chapters explain the nature of electrical fields that generate surface recorded potentials, summarize the imaging modalities that complement evoked potential studies, and review acoustics and instrumentation. Major sections examine the anatomy and physiology of the auditory periphery, brainstem, and cortex and the principles and clinical applications of auditory, myogenic, visual, somatosensory, and vestibular evoked potentials. Chapters present hands-on laboratory exercises and clinical case studies. A full-color insert includes 3D images from multi-channel evoked potentials and functional imaging.
Assessment of the central auditory nervous system; pseudohypacusis; occupational hearing loss prevention; and instrumentation and calibration. For hearing professionals and others looking for the latest information on contemporary hearing assessment.
Karl Bühler (1879–1963) was one of the leading theoreticians of language of the twentieth century. Although primarily a psychologist, Bühler devoted much of his attention to the study of language and language theory. His masterwork Sprachtheorie (1934) quickly gained recognition in the fields of linguistics, semiotics, the philosophy of language and the psychology of language. This new edition of the English translation of Bühler’s theory begins with a survey on ‘Bühler’s legacy’ for modern linguistics (Werner Abraham), followed by the Theory of Language, and finally with a special ‘Postscript: Twenty-five Years Later ...’ (Achim Eschbach). Bühler’s theory is divided int...
Transitions from authoritarian to democratic governments can provide ripe scenarios for the emergence of new, insurgent political actors and causes. During peaceful transitions, such movements may become influential political players and gain representation for previously neglected interests and sectors of the population. But for this to happen, insurgent social movements need opportunities for mobilization, success, and survival. This book looks at Mexico's Zapatista movement, and why the movement was able to mobilize sympathy and support for the indigenous agenda inside and outside of the country, yet failed to achieve their goals vis-à-vis the Mexican state.
This book is a clinical manual that covers the whole spectrum of swallowing and its disorders. It starts with physiology of swallowing, pathophysiology of disordered deglutition, diagnostic methods (clinical and instrumental) and ends with an in-depth’s and up-to-date presentation of current treatment options. The clinically most relevant topics of dysphagia management on the stroke unit and the intensive care unit are dealt with in separate chapters. Also the closely intertwined issue of nutritional management is specifically addressed. Most importantly, the book covers all obligatory topics of the Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)-curriculum, an educational initiative t...

Following the publication of the department of health document - Comprehensive Critical Care (2000), the majority of hospitals in England have set up Critical Care Outreach Teams. The Government provided a significant sum of money for hospitals to set up outreach services. There are now calls for an evaluation of their impact. The book is set out in five key sections. Each section features chapters that address the conceptual and real life issues. In each section there is a chapter, set out as a case study example, demonstrating how innovative practices and service developments are going on around critical care outreach. The book will draw upon the knowledge, experience and clinical expertise of senior critical care nurses and doctors from a critical care network. The book will have a definite practical application and will provide tips to enhance practice. * Chapters contain useful 'how to' guides, prompts for critical thinking and case studies. * Very little has previously been published on this topic
