DNA barcoding and biochemical profiling of medical plants of northern and desert areas of Pakistan to improve rural living standard

Pakistan is a country with a varied climate and hosts a large number of medicinal plant species. Most of the medicinal plants are collected in the wild by local communities. These plants are an important source of livelihood for rural economies. However, no systematic documentation has been undertaken to assist in proving ownership of the plant resources. This project focused on the conservation of natural plant resources by using modern molecular techniques and creating awareness for determining the active ingredients of the plants through biochemical profiling. Further objectives of the study were to identify marketing channels for medicinal plants, costs and margins of stakeholders involved in the marketing of medicinal plants, and factors responsible for the poor trade and decreasing population of these plants in the two study areas of Swat Valley and Cholistan Desert.

Oral Carriage & Suffering of Staphylococcus Aureus

The oral cavity carriage and antibiotic susceptibility patterns of Staphylococcus aureus in Dental hospital staff and healthy general population were determined. Oral cavity swabs were taken from 113 healthy general population and 90 health care workers. Antibiotic disc susceptibility testing was conducted following the CLSI method. Staphylococcus aureus carriage was noted in 28.3% of healthy general population and 38.9% of health care workers. Resistance to commonly used oral antibiotics of healthy general population & health care workers, ampicillin 93.8% & 97.2%, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid 84.4% & 77.2%, amoxicillin 43.8% & 57.2%, ciprofloxacin 53.2% & 57.2% and ofloxacin 37.5% & 42.9%, ...

Current Cancer Treatment

This book is a collection of in-depth chapters on many aspects of contemporary cancer treatment. Written by experts worldwide, each chapter provides a detailed summary of the state-of-the art knowledge in the area, with extensive references and clear and informative diagrams. The volume is divided into two sections: “Basic Science” and “Clinical Challenges.” The five chapters in the first section cover MicroRNA, the role of angiogenesis in the tumor microenvironment, microbial metabolites in the gastrointestinal microenvironment, the role of dendritic cells in anti-tumor immunity, and challenges of current cancer biomarkers. The two chapters in the second section cover pediatric CNS tumors and the role of sentinel node biopsy in endometrial cancer. The information in this book is designed for cancer clinicians and interested readers to whom this knowledge is important for focusing research and improving patient outcomes.

CRISPR Crops

This book compiles the latest applications of the cutting-edge gene editing tool CRISPR/Cas in the area of crop improvement. It begins with an introduction to the technique and its application in crop plants. Next, it gives an updated overview of available delivery methods, design tools and resources in CRISPR/Cas. The book subsequently reviews the applications of CRISPR/Cas in connection with e.g. insect stress, disease stress, abiotic stress, nutritional and yield improvement in crop plants, etc. It also discusses the various regulatory, ethical and social aspects of the technique that must be kept in mind when designing experiments. In closing, the book summarizes the status quo and outlines future prospects for the tool in crop improvement and food security. Given its scope, the book will especially benefit students and researchers in food science, biotechnology, agriculture and the plant sciences.

Various tools and techniques are being used for the diagnosis of cancer, but not a sole technique provides powerful result at the very early stages of cancer. This provides the need for type of tools which could detect cancer at early stages so that survival rate could be augmented. There are various diagnostic ways to identify cancer, but in each case, there are always circumstances to compromise on the sensitivity. In this framework, a new and more advanced approach of diagnosis for cancer is microRNA (miRNA). miRNAs are conserved regions among humans and animals, and their synthesis takes place in the nucleus and cytoplasm. There are several types of microRNAs that could be upregulated and downregulated in various cancers. A cancer cell could be identified by measurement of the expression pattern of miRNA. By examining the expression level for different types of cancers, miRNA can be used as biomarker for early detection of cancer in human beings.
