In 1993 three institutes belonging respectively to the Heidelberg Academy for Humanities and Sciences, to the Russian Academy of Sciences, and to the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, launched a cooperative research project. The main aim of the project is to develop mathematical methodologies needed for better information support in health policy decision-making in the area of primary health care provision for the Russian populations affected by radiation due to the Chernobyl accident. At present, the major data basis of the project is the Russian National medical and Dosimetric (Chernobyl) Registry administered at the Medical Radiological Research Centre, Obninsk. The book describes the general mathematical approaches to the project and the given conditions of the registry.
Radiation safety and risk management, a critical issue in the nuclear age, is an ongoing concern in the field of radiation health risk sciences. It is the particular mission and task of the Nagasaki University Global COE program to explore human health risks from radiation on a global scale and to come up with measures for overcoming its negative legacies. Ionizing radiation is a well-documented human cancer risk factor, and long-term health consequences in individuals exposed at a young age to such events as the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombing are now being followed up. Unique and comprehensive, this book introduces updated radiation health-related issues, including the proper collection and analysis of biological samples, cancer research, psychological effects, fair disclosure, and the effects of low-dose exposure as they apply to future public health policy. Also addressed is the need for emergency radiation medicine in case of accidents.
CAR is a symposium and exhibition covering the impact of computer and communication systems applied to radiology and other medical disciplines, which use digital imaging for diagnosis and therapy planning. CAR '93 also provides tutorials, but more emphasis is given to a broad variety of specific problems related to medical/technical issues in digital imaging. This is achieved through in-depth presentations of results of current medical imaging projects on a worldwide basis.
The essays in this book examine the arguments and rhetoric used by the United States and the USSR following two catastrophes that impacted both countries, as blame is cast and consequences are debated. In this environment, it was perhaps inevitable that conspiracy theories would arise, especially about the downing of Korean Air Lines Flight 007 over the Sea of Japan. Those theories are examined, resulting in at least one method for addressing conspiracy arguments. In the case of Chernobyl, the disaster ruptured the “social compact” between the Soviet government and the people; efforts to overcome the resulting disillusionment quickly became the focus of state efforts.
Hardbound. The Chernobyl Sasakawa Health and Medical Cooperation Project completed its 5-year health screening project at the end of April 1996, and a total of about 160,000 children were examined in the project at the five diagnostic centers located around Chernobyl in Belarus, Russian Federation, and Ukraine. The results of the health screening have been separately published every year since 1992 by the respective centers on the basis of their presentation at the Chernobyl Sasakawa Medical Cooperation Symposium. However, this volume presents the results of the 5-year health screening at all five centers from the viewpoints of dosimetry, thyroid diseases, and hematological abnormalities.Although originally started in May 1991 as a humanitarian aid project in response to the request of the government of the former Soviet Union, the project became a collaborative work shared by Belarus, the Russian Federation, Ukraine and Japan.
