Functionele ziektebeelden zoals gastro-oesofageale reflux, buikpijn en obstipatie behoren tot de meest voorkomende aandoeningen op de kinderleeftijd. Deze aandoeningen hebben vaak een aanzienlijke invloed op het kind, het gezin en de omgeving, en kunnen leiden tot aanzienlijk schoolverzuim. In vergelijking met kinderen met bijvoorbeeld chronische darmziekten, zoals de ziekte van Crohn of colitis ulcerosa, is de kwaliteit van leven beduidend lager. Verrassend genoeg ontbreken bij kinderen met functionele ziektebeelden goede studies waarin de effectiviteit en veiligheid van zowel dieetinterventies als geneesmiddelen zijn onderzocht. Onderzoek laat zelfs zien dat meer dan 80% van de geneesmiddelen die aan zuigelingen en kinderen in ziekenhuizen worden toegediend niet zijn onderzocht op de aangegeven indicatie, veiligheid en effectiviteit, en mogelijk dus ineffectief en schadelijk zijn. Het uitvoeren van grote placebo-gecontroleerde klinische studies bij kinderen van alle leeftijden is niet eenvoudig maar wel noodzakelijk, en vergt niet alleen een perfecte organisatie maar ook teamspirit en doorzettingsvermogen.
