Abstract: Background Patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) are potentially prone for a severe COVID-19 course, but there are limited real-world data available on the risk associated with COVID-19 for patients with MG. Here, we investigate whether current immunosuppressive therapy (IST) influences the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 severity. Methods Data from the German myasthenia gravis registry were analyzed from May 2020 until June 2021 and included patient demographics, MG disease duration, comorbidities, current IST use, COVID-19 characteristics, and outcomes. Propensity score matching was employed to match MG patients with IST to those without, and multivariable binary logisti...

New Perspectives in the Treatment of Myasthenia Gravis

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder caused by autoantibodies against post-synaptic proteins at the neuromuscular junction. These antibodies mostly attack the acetylcholine receptor (AChR), the muscle-specific kinase (MuSK), and the low-density lipoprotein-related protein 4 (LRP4). The main clinical characteristic of the disease is the presence of fluctuating fatigable muscle weakness involving the extraocular, facial, bulbar, respiratory, cervical, and proximal limb muscles. It is known that the thymus has an important role in the pathophysiology of the disease, and some patients associate a thymoma.

Neuroprotection

In this first book to cover model systems, molecular mechanisms and clinical trials all in one volume internationally renowned scientists and clinicians provide a comprehensive treatment of neuroprotective strategies for all important neurological disorders. Following an overview of neurodegenerative, traumatic, and ischemic disorders, the book goes on to cover in vitro and animal model systems as well as cellular and molecular mechanisms. An extremely helpful analysis of clinical studies explains reasons for their success and failure, and the whole is rounded off with a look at the current challenges and hopes for the development of effective treatment strategies in the future.

Aldous Huxley and Self-Realization

Throughout his writing career, and especially in the last thirty years of his life, Aldous Huxley exhibited a deep interest in human potentialities, which he often described as our greatest unused natural resource. The present volume is the first book to focus on this Huxleyan core concern. It is based on presentations given at the Sixth International Aldous Huxley Symposium held in 2017 at the University of Almería (Spain). This volume collects essays by eleven scholars from eight countries that discuss Huxley's concept of human potentialities from an interdisciplinary perspective. This is another innovative feature of this book, since today Huxley is mainly remembered as a novelist, altho...

INTRODUCTIONTherapeutic hypothermia is a promising candidate for stroke treatment. However, some adverse events, such as infections, might complicate stroke outcome. We aimed to assess whether blood biomarkers might be associated with the therapeutic benefit or adverse events of hypothermia.METHODSThe EuroHYP-1 study (EudraCT number 2012-002944-25) was a randomized multicenter clinical trial comparing the efficacy of therapeutic hypothermia initiated within 6 hours after stroke vs. best medical treatment (BMT). Blood samples were obtained at three time-points; baseline (before hypothermia initiation), within the first hour after rewarming, and 72 hours after stroke. A panel of 27 biomarkers ...
