The Regional Workshop on Safety at Sea in Artisanal and Small-scale Fisheries in Latin America and the Caribbean took place in the city of Paita, Peru, from 2 to 4 July 2007. Thirty-seven Latin American experts, as well as experts from Sweden and representatives of FAO and the Latin American Organization for Fisheries Development (OLDEPESCA) participated. En el seminario se presentaron los resultados del Estudio sobre la seguridad en el mar para la pesca artesanal y en pequena escala en America Latina y el Caribe, asi como las relaciones sobre aspectos de seguridad en el mar por los expertos invitados. Los expertos de los paises asistentes describieron la situacion de la seguridad en el mar en sus respectivos paises. La informacion ofrecida fue debatida en plenario, abarcando la seguridad en el mar en la ordenacion de la pesca artesanal; las medidas de seguridad y las operaciones pesqueras; los registros de informacion sobre accidentes en el mar y la legislacion; asi como la tecnologia, diseno y construccion de embarcaciones. The workshop examined the status of aquaculture in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a focus on its contribution to economic and social development and the major difficulties it faces.
