The title of Beyond the Line refers to the imaginary "Line" drawn between North and South, a division established by the Peace Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis in 1559. This is an early modern time and Eurocentric construction, according to which the southern oceanic world has long been taken as symbol of expansionist philosophies and practices. This volume focuses on how travel writing contributed to cultural and intellectual exchange in and between the Dutch- and German-speaking regions from the 1790s to the twentieth-century interwar period. Drawing on a hitherto largely overlooked body of travelers whose work ranges across what is now Germany and Austria, the Netherlands and Dutch-speaking Belgium, the Dutch East Indies and Suriname, the contributors highlight the interrelations between the regional and the global and the role alterity plays in both spheres. Bene ha fatto dunque l'Università di Aquisgrana a puntare sui due versanti della qualità letteraria e della singolare dimensione dell'esperienza umana di Beppe Fenoglio, offrendo il contributo delle analisi dei migliori specialisti del settore accanto al resoconto commosso e partecipe dei diretti testimoni di questa esperienza di vita. Al centro del convegno la voce di Marisa Fenoglio, la sorella dello scrittore che ha fatto valere la trama biografica, la tessitura memoriale nell'opera di Beppe e ha contemporaneamente offerto un'intelligente lettura della sua 'puntuta' esperienza umana.
