La formació en física de tot enginyer informàtic és important pels dos motius següents. En primer lloc, un enginyer informàtic ha de conèixer els fonaments físics del funcionament dels ordinadors i dels equipaments perifèrics. A més, ha de tenir una base científica prou àmplia per a poder comprendre els fonaments d'una tecnologia que està en contínua evolució. En segon lloc, la matèria de física ajuda a potenciar la capacitat de raonament i a desenvolupar l'enginy. L'anàlisi que fa la física dels fenòmens de la natura proporciona una metodologia general d'estudi i de treball que és molt útil a l'hora de buscar solucions informàtiques de molts problemes.
