Jewish Literatures and Cultures in Southeastern Europe
The volume offers an overview of the diverse Jewish experiences in Southeastern Europe from the 19th to the 21st centuries, and the various forms and strategies of their representation in literature, the arts, historiography and philosophy. Southeastern Europe is characterized by a high degree of ethnical, religious and cultural diversity. Jews, whether Sephardim, Ashkenazim or Romaniots – settling there in different periods – experienced divergent life worlds which engendered rich cultural production. Though recent scholarly and popular interest in this heterogeneous region has grown impressively, Jewish cultural production is still an under-researched area. The volume offers an overview of the diverse Jewish experiences in Southeastern Europe from the 19th to the 21st centuries, and the various forms and strategies of their representation in literature, the arts, historiography and philosophy, thus creating a dialogue between Jewish studies, Balkan studies, and current literary and cultural theories.

«Uansett kvar du har vore, har nokon andre også vore der. Og dei hadde med seg ungane dit. Og besteforeldra.» Sommaren 2020 kunne vi ikkje reise på ferie dit vi ville. Helst skulle vi feriere i heimlandet. For å vise at dette takla vi, så skrytte vi av ferien. Sjølv no, minst eit halvt århundre etter at charterturisme blei vanlig, lenge etter at gruppereiser til Sør-Europa blei ein vits, og atten år etter at denne boka blei utgitt første gong, sjølv no er det dette vi samanliknar oss med når ferien skal vurderast. Kalvøs første møte med Syden var ei spansk ferieøy full av tyskarar som underheldt kvarandre i hotellbaren med sketsjar med overdriven bruk av bananar som rekvisittar. Likevel vender Kalvø i denne boka tilbake, fast bestemt på å finne Syden-draumen.

Ze zvědavosti se proto vydal do hor zjistit, co žene lidi k tomu, aby se ve volném čase vzdávali městských radovánek, investovali nehorázné peníze do turistického vybavení, trmáceli se osm hodin v dešti a mlze a večery trávili v páchnoucím funkčním prádle ve společnosti stejně zavánějících milovníků přírody na chatách s prapodivnými jmény jako Komáří domov, U Ošklivce, Vraní hnízdo nebo Kočičí řiť. --------- Kalvø až k popukání zábavně líčí své zážitky v přírodě… Bezpochyby nejlepší kniha, jakou kdy napsal nejvtipnější Nor současnosti. – Aftenposten Nejradši se vydávám na místa, kde jsou lidé. A ještě lépe číšníci.
