Le 24 décembre 1800, quand explose, rue Saint-Nicaise, la machine infernale destinée à tuer le Premier consul, Armelle de Courmont a vingt-trois ans. Son oncle, le sénateur Gendreau, l'a recueillie chez lui à Paris pour la soustraire à la vindicte de ses amis royalistes qui l'accusent d'avoir trahi la Cause en servant d'intermédiaire entre les Blancs et les Bleus pendant les guerres de Vendée. Sans avoir rompu sa liaison avec le général républicain Travot, pacificateur de la Vendée, Armelle est fiancée à un jeune ex-émigré que son ralliement au Consulat n'empêche pas de comploter contre Bonaparte. Elle se trouve ainsi involontairement mêlée à l'attentat du 3 Nivôse, et les mailles du filet tendu par Fouché, ministre de la Police, se resserrent peu à peu sur elle. Toutes les grandes figures de l'époque, avec leurs passions et leurs calculs, sont dans ce livre, sous une lumière crue. Mieux qu'un roman historique, Demain, rue Saint-Nicaise est un roman politique - ce qui ne saurait étonner sous la plume de Philippe Mestre.

Education and Development in Colonial and Postcolonial Africa
This open access edited volume offers an analysis of the entangled histories of education and development in twentieth-century Africa. It deals with the plurality of actors that competed and collaborated to formulate educational and developmental paradigms and projects: debating their utility and purpose, pondering their necessity and risk, and evaluating their intended and unintended consequences in colonial and postcolonial moments. Since the late nineteenth century, the “educability” of the native was the subject of several debates and experiments: numerous voices, arguments, and agendas emerged, involving multiple institutions and experts, governmental and non-governmental, religious and laic, operating from the corridors of international organizations to the towns and rural villages of Africa. This plurality of expressions of political, social, cultural, and economic imagination of education and development is at the core of this collective work.
