Smaller nations have a special place in the international system, with a striking capacity to defy the expectations of most observers and many prominent theories of international relations. Dissident Marxism and Utopian Eco-Socialism in the German Democratic Republic
Rudolf Bahro, Wolfgang Harich and Robert Havemann were probably the best-known critics of the DDR’s ruling Socialist Unity Party. Yet they saw themselves as Marxists, and their demands extended far beyond a democratisation of real socialism. When environmental issues became more important in the West in the 1970s, the Party treated it as an ideological manoeuvre of the class enemy. The three dissidents saw things differently: they combined socialism and ecology, adopting a utopian perspective frowned upon by the state. In doing so, they created political concepts that were unique for the Eastern Bloc. Alexander Amberger introduces them, relates them to each other, and poses the question of their relevance then and now.

Importance of Christian and Social Democratic Movements in Welfare Politics
This book traces the reasons for the differences between Continental and Northern European welfare state developments by applying a selected case study approach. Three countries were looked at: Germany, Austria, and Sweden, because all have different political settings. In order to keep a sharp focus on the different causes for European welfare state development, the author traced it back to its roots (i.e. by focusing on the people, the movements and parties that implemented, developed, and changed the course in welfare states). To determine the importance of Christian democratic and social movements numerous historical phases were also studied.

Eric Voegelin on China and Universal Humanity: A Study of Voegelin’s Hermeneutic Empirical Paradigm aims to speak to comparative political theorists, philosophers, historians, sinologists, and anyone interested in understanding our current disorders and exploring a culturally non-specific paradigm for understanding equivalent practices and patterns in the global age, especially China and the West. Specifically, this book looks at Eric Voegelin’s (1901–1985) Theory of Order. It focuses on Voegelin’s interpretation of order/disorder, his penetration of the Tianxia (the Chinese Ecumene), and his comparison of two representative heterogenous Ecumenes in the ancient West and East. In doing so, the book explores the issue of universal humankind and the nature of order-searching.

At a time when narrow scientific and philosophical specialization dominates our academic landscape, a thinking that unfolds in broad ways is often viewed with some suspicion. This, however, is not the case of Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics, which is still present today in the most diverse fields of philosophy and the humanities.
