CLAWS Journal

The CLAWS Journal Winter 2022 is focussed on strategic, conceptual and technological aspects of development of military capabilities. We need to examine security makeover and a road map for securing rise of India as a developed nation in near future. With assertive China on our northern borders, there is a need to visualise the context and contours of India’s future wars. Nuclear deterrence remains relevant for India to maintain strategic stability especially against assertive China. At the same time Indian military should incorporate non-contact warfare as a strategy to fight multi-domain wars.

Drawing from hands-on experience, the authors suggest the ways and means necessary to secure India from emerging security challenges on land, air, sea, space, cyber domain and even cognitive domain. The notion of victory in the 21st century has undergone a profound change as highlighted in recent conflicts across the globe. These essays imaginatively examine grey zone conflict, urban warfare and mountain warfare, along with dynamic military strategies to secure India.

Cyber Warfare

Each era brings with it new techniques and methods of waging a war. While military scholars and experts have mastered land, sea, air and space warfare, time has come that they studied the art of cyberwar too. Our neighbours have acquired the capabilities to undertake this new form of asymmetric form of warfare. India too therefore needs to acquire the capabilities to counter their threat. Cyber space seems to have invaded every aspect of our life. More and more systems whether public or private are getting automated and networked. This high dependence of our critical infrastructure on Information and Communication Technology exposes it to the vulnerabilities of cyberspace. Enemy now can targ...

Tiananmen Square

'I recall being woken by the sound of tanks moving down the Avenue of Eternal Peace. It was 5 o'clock on the morning of 4 June. Tanks, APCs and troop trucks were sweeping down the avenue. Citizens ran for cover. Helicopters hovered above. Foreign media claimed that Chinese troops had fired into the crowds with several hundred casualties.' More than three decades later, the Tiananmen Square incident refuses to be forgotten. The events that occurred in the summer of 1989 would not only set the course for China's politics but would also re-define its relationship with the world. China's message was clear: it remained committed to market-oriented reform, but it would not tolerate any challenge to the supremacy of the Chinese Communist Party. In return for economic prosperity, the Chinese have surrendered some rights to the state. A democratic future seems far away. Vijay Gokhale, then a young diplomat serving in Beijing, was a witness to the drama that unfolded in Tiananmen Square. This unique account brings an Indian perspective on an event in China's history that the Chinese government has been eager to have the world forget.

India's China Challenge

Ananth Krishnan first moved to China in the summer of 2008. In the years that followed, he had a ringside view of the country's remarkable transformation. He reported from Beijing for a decade, for the India Today and The Hindu. This gave him a privileged opportunity that few Indians have had -- to travel the length and breadth of the country, beyond the glitzy skyscrapers of Shanghai and the grand avenues of Beijing that greet most tourists, to the heart of China's rise. This book is Krishnan's attempt at unpacking India's China challenge, which is four-fold: the political challenge of dealing with a one-party state that is looking to increasingly shape global institutions; the military cha...

Amongst the civilizations to participate in the dynamic processes of contact and interchange that gave rise to complex societies in the ancient Near East, Elam has remained one of the most obscure, at times languishing in the background of scholarly inquiry. In recent years, however, an increasing body of academic publications have acknowledged its relevance and suggested that its legacy was more considerable and long-lasting than previously estimated. The Elamite World assembles a group of 40 international scholars to contribute their expertise to the production of a solid, lavishly illustrated, English language treatment of Elamite civilization. It covers topics such as its physical setting, historical development, languages and people, material culture, art, science, religion and society, as well as the legacy of Elam in the Persian empire and its presence in the modern world. This comprehensive and ambitious survey seeks for Elam, hardly a household name, a noteworthy place in our shared cultural heritage. It will be both a valuable introductory text for a general audience and a definitive reference source for students and academics.

A conspicuous hiatus in literature on Hittite ritual exists on the transfer and substitution techniques or motifs. This is the first full description and analysis of this ritual, and as such provides the readers with an important contribution to our understanding of Hittite religious practice. The Hittite substitution ritual is here presented making use of much new textual material. It presents the manuscripts with translations and transcriptions of all duplicate texts, an ample glossary of words, full thematic indices, and commentaries. The latter shed light on the linguistic and cultural aspects, the role of chthonic deities, the cult of ancestors of North Syrian origin, etc., thus also defining a history of various purification motifs in Hittite substitution rituals.
