Mengapa mantiq amat penting untuk dipelajari? Ialah karena fungsinya sebagai ilmu alat. Ketika ‘ilmu alat’ disebut, umumnya orang yang belajar ilmu-ilmu keislaman hari ini cenderung akan mengasosiasikannya dengan gramatika bahasa Arab, yakni nahwu (sintaksis) dan sharf (morfologi). Namun, khazanah klasik Islam menyebut mantiq sebagai ilmu alat juga. “Waba’du fal-manthiqu lil-janāni # nisbatuhu kan-naḥwi lil-lisāni”, demikian tulis Al-Akhdhari (w. 1575) dalam nazam As-Sullam al-Munawraq. “Mantiq bagi pikiran ialah seperti nahwu bagi bahasa.” Lebih tegas lagi, di salah satu karyanya yang menjadi kitab babon dalam ushul fiqh, al-Mustashfā, al-Ghazali menyampaikan, “Man la yaḥīthu bih fala tsiqata bi’ulūmihi ashlan”. “Siapa tak menguasai mantiq, ilmunya tidak tepercaya.” Buku ini menghimpun catatan dari kajian terhadap Mi’yārul-‘Ilmi fil-Manthiq karya al-Ghazali dan ditambah dengan bacaan-bacaan lain untuk memperkaya. Sebagaimana tampak nanti setelah membaca buku ini, peran vital mantiq bahkan bukan saja terbatas pada fungsinya sebagai ilmu alat, melainkan juga pemberi dasar rasional bagi diktum-diktum akidah.
