A schoolwide solution for mathematics success! When "rules" seem to change from year to year, mathematics can seem like a disconnected mystery for students. Clear up the confusion with a Mathematics Whole-School Agreement! Expanded from the highly popular "Rules that Expire" series of NCTM articles, this essential guide leads educators through the collaborative step-by-step process of establishing a coherent and consistent learner-centered and equitable approach to mathematics instruction. You’ll learn to avoid "rules that expire"—tricks that may seem to help students in one grade but hurt in the long run. Features include · Abundant grade-specific examples · Effective working plans for sustainability · Barrier-busting tips, to-dos, and try-it-outs · PLC prompts and discussion points

This document contains two contributions: "Voyaging from Theory to Practice in Teaching: Measure Up" (Barbara J. Dougherty) and "Voyaging from Theory to Practice in Learning: Teacher Professional Development" (Joseph Zilliox). Hawaii is a place of diverse cultures, ethnicities, and traditions representing a myriad of global regions. Education within such a setting creates a unique opportunity and challenge to create tasks and processes by which all students can learn. The two papers presented in this plenary illustrate how theory and practice in the Hawaii setting build on each other, one focusing on teaching and the other focusing on learning. The theories surrounding the two papers may be slightly different to accommodate the foci of the papers. However, both papers use the theories and experiences from practice to address the perspectives of the classroom and the needs of the key stakeholders--teachers and students. (Contains 1 figure and 2 tables.) [For complete proceedings, see ED500857.].

How do composing and decomposing numbers connect with the properties of addition? Focus on the ideas that you need to thoroughly understand in order to teach with confidence. The mathematical content of this book focuses on essential knowledge for teachers about numbers and number systems. It is organised around one big idea and supported by smaller, more specific, interconnected ideas (essential understandings). Gaining this understanding is essential because numbers and numeration are building blocks for other mathematical concepts and for thinking quantitatively about the real-world. Essential Understanding series topics include: Number and Numeration for Grades Pre-K-2 Addition and Subtr...

Curriculum materials are among the most pervasive and powerful influences on school mathematics. In many mathematics classes, student assignments, the questions the teacher asks, the ways students are grouped, the forms of assessment, and much more originate in curriculum materials. At the same time, teachers have considerable latitude in how they use their curriculum materials. Two classes making use of the same materials may differ markedly in what mathematics content is emphasized and how students are engaged in learning that content. This volume considers a variety of research tools for investigating the enactment of mathematics curriculum materials, describing the conceptualization, development, and uses of seven sets of tools. Mathematics education researchers, curriculum developers, teacher educators, district supervisors, teacher leaders, and math coaches will find insights that can improve their work, and guidance for selecting, adapting, and using tools for understanding the complex relationship between curriculum materials and their enactment in classroom instruction.

How can you introduce terms from geometry and measurement so that your students’ vocabulary will enhance their understanding of concepts and definitions? What can you say to clarify the thinking of a student who claims that perimeter is always an even number? How does knowing what changes or stays the same when shapes are transformed help you support and extend your students’ understanding of shapes and the space that they occupy? How much do you know … and how much do you need to know? Helping your students develop a robust understanding of geometry and measurement requires that you understand fundamental statistical concepts deeply. But what does that mean? This book focuses on essen...
