This volume considers the submissions to the 6th International IFIP-TC 9/WG 9.1 Conference on Women, Work and Computerization WWC 97. The conference provides an interdisciplinary forum for researchers, practitioners and users in the field of information technology. In this book the authors discuss how different areas of society are being transformed by computer technology, but with particular emphasis on changes in women's work and life and how these have come about. Such transformations include the transitions from women's traditional work to work based on modern technology; from communicating within personal communities to communicating within virtual communities; from traditional job gendering to new perspectives on "who does what".
The (potential) use of gender-inclusive language is being discussed controversially in the public sphere. Opinions on it have increasingly been voiced by individuals as well as organisations. These include state institutions, private associations, subject specialists such as linguists, and private individuals / laypeople. Views of and attitudes towards the use of gender-inclusive language cover a broad spectrum between extreme ends, and even subject specialists hold conflicting views. Research on gender-inclusive language is very much a current trend in linguistics, including the so-called ‘genderless’ languages. However, the focus is mostly on structural issues, while sociolinguistic research on attitudes towards the use of gender-inclusive language is mostly missing. Some scattered work in this area has been published, but a more thorough understanding and conceptualisation of attitudes is still needed. Furthermore, a multilingual, comparative perspective is still missing. This edited volume will address these shortcomings.
This volume contains the proceedings of a panel on the feminist work of Herta Nagl-Docekal, organized by Gertrude Postl within the context of a conference of the Association for Philosophy and Literature (APL). It includes papers on the practical application of Nagl-Docekal's work for feminist counseling services (Bettina Zehetner), on the interconnection of moral philosophy and epistemology (Waltraud Ernst), on feminist aesthetics (Cornelia Esianu), and on Nagl- Docekal's contributions to a feminist philosophy of religion (Brigitte Buchhammer). Diversity is both a cause for controversial discussions and an opportunity to reflect on social participation. This book offers a basic introduction to important currents in diversity research by presenting central theoretical determinants of the research perspective. An analysis of the diversity strategy and its implementation at the University of California, Berkeley serves as an empirical-practical example in this regard. In particular, this case study illustrates the intersectional research perspective and the multi-level and multi-method research design of reflexive diversity research. In the sense of reflexive constructivism, the practice of research itself is reflected using the example of the case study.
In German Religious Women in Late Ottoman Beirut. Competing Missions, Julia Hauser offers a critical analysis of the German Protestant Kaiserswerth deaconesses’ orphanage and boarding school for girls in late Ottoman Beirut as situated within the larger field of educational development in the city. Drawing, among other sources, on the deaconesses’ largely unpublished letters home, her study illuminates that the only way missionary organizations like the deaconesses' could succeed was by entering into negotiations with their local environment, adapting their agenda in the process. Mission, therefore, was shaped not merely at home, but by conflictual negotiations on the periphery ‒ a perspective quite different from the top-down isolationist perspective of earlier research on missions.
