New Perspectives on Imagology
With this volume, the editors Katharina Edtstadler, Sandra Folie, and Gianna Zocco propose an extension of the traditional conception of imagology as a theory and method for studying the cultural construction and literary representation of national, usually European characters. Consisting of an instructive introduction and 21 articles, the book relates this sub-field of comparative literature to contemporary political developments and enriches it with new interdisciplinary, transnational, intersectional, and intermedial perspectives. Hidden Multilingualism in 19th-Century European Literature
The disparagement of multilingualism is a European development of the 18th and 19th centuries in which one national language and national literature were advocated, established and institutionalised. Multilingual writers made use of the creative potential of several languages even then. However, they often adapted to an increasingly monolingual book market, which made their individual multilingualism invisible. Cities as Multiple Landscapes
Cities are composed of a combination of urban and rural spaces, buildings and boundaries, and human bodies engaged in political, social, and cultural discourses. Together, these combine to create what the contributors to this volume call multiple landscapes. Developing a new theoretical conceptualization of cities, this book unites American and European approaches to comparative urban studies by investigating the concept of multiple landscapes in two sister cities: New Orleans and Innsbruck. As the essays reveal, both New Orleans and Innsbruck have long been centers of multicultural exchange, have strong senses of historical heritage, and profit from the spectacular geographies in which they are situated. Geography, in particular, links both cities to environmental, technological, and security challenges that must be considered in connection with aesthetic, cultural, and ecological debates. Diese Studie fragt nach der Bedeutung des Sprechens und Schreibens für die Mitteilung und den Vollzug von Gefühlen der Zugehörigkeit. In Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk zweier literarischer Gegenwartsautorinnen, Herta Müller und Ilma Rakusa, entwickelt sie das affektpoetologische Programm eines Schreibens im Wi(e)derspruch, das literaturwissenschaftliche Verfahren erstmalig mit Ansätzen der sozialwissenschaftlich grundierten Zugehörigkeitsforschung verbindet und sich an ein interdisziplinär aufgeschlossenes Lesepublikum richtet. Marion Acker zeigt, dass Zugehörigkeit eine vielgestaltige Herausforderung ist, die im Schreiben der beiden Autorinnen immer wieder aufs Neue aufgenommen wird und das Potenzial besitzt, normative Annahmen zu hinterfragen.
