Scripts of Servitude
This book examines how language is a central resource in transforming migrant women into transnational domestic workers. Focusing on the migration of women from the Philippines to Singapore, the book unpacks why and how language is embedded in the infrastructure of transnational labor migration that links migrant-sending and migrant-receiving countries. It sheds light on the everyday lives of transnational domestic workers and how they draw on their linguistic repertoires, and in particular on English, as they cross geographical and social spaces. By showing how the transnational mobility of labor is dependent on the selection and performance of particular assemblages of linguistic resources that index migrants as labor and not as people, the book provides a powerful lens with which to examine how migration contributes to relationships of inequality and how such inequalities are produced and challenged on the terrain of language.
Asian Migrations
The migration of people within and beyond Asia no longer takes the form of permanent ruptures, uprooting, and resettlement. HOME AND AWAY INDONESIAN WOMEN AND THEIR UNIQUE TRANSNATIONAL MIGRATION EXPERIENCES IN MALAYSIA
This book explores the migration processes and experiences of female labour migrants from Indonesia to Malaysia’s manufacturing sector. Their stories depict labour migration as a process shaped by the intersection of external, structural forces and individual desires and motivations. Labour migration was valued and evaluated as an “investment”, one that was calculated not only in terms of financial security but also in relation to personal rewards and experiences unavailable to them at home. These labour migrants negotiated a number of externally imposed demands and conditions, ranging from migration regulations, the challenges of settlement in a new city, factory floor relations, and the negative stereotypes attached to female Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia. Such constraints did not simply result in their sense of victimisation, as the interviews revealed the women’s capacity to resist, negotiate and comply with such factors. The book distinguishes between two groups of migrants: inexperienced, first-time migrants and experienced repeat migrants.
The Politics of English
This volume brings together contributions that explore the increasingly important roles that English plays in Asia, including its contribution to economic growth, national imaginaries and creative writing. These are issues that are political in a broad sense, but the diversity of Asian contexts also means that the social, political and cultural ramifications of the spread of English into Asia will have to be understood in relation to the challenges facing specific societies. The chapters in the book collectively illustrate this diversity by focusing on countries from South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Asia Pacific. Each country has two contributions devoted to it: one paper provides an overview of the country s language policy and its positioning of English, and another provides a critical discussion of creative expressions involving the use of English. English Linguistic Imperialism from Below
Imperialism may be over, but the political, economic and cultural subjugation of social life through English has only intensified. This book demonstrates how English has been newly constituted as a dominant language in post-market reform India through the fervent aspirations of non-elites and the zealous reforms of English Language Teaching experts. The most recent spread of English in India has been through low-fee private schools, which are perceived as dubious yet efficient. The book is an ethnography of mothering at one such low-fee private school and its neighboring state-funded school. It demonstrates that political economic transitions, experienced as radical social mobility, fuelled intense desire for English schooling. Rather than English schooling leading to social mobility, new experiences of mobility necessitated English schooling. At the same time, experts have responded to the unanticipated spread of English by transforming it from a second language to a first language, and earlier hierarchies have been produced anew as access to English democratized.
Malaysian Literature in English
This collection of essays brings together work by some of the most internationally acclaimed critics of Malaysian literature in English from different parts of the world, including Australia, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and the US. It investigates the works of major writers of the tradition in the genres of drama, fiction and poetry, from its beginnings to the present, focusing mainly on thematic and stylistic trends. The book pays particular attention to issues such as gender, ethnicity, nationalism, multiculturalism, diaspora, hybridity and transnationalism, which are central to the creativity and imagination of these writers.
