Playing the Game
This research focused on how women card dealers made meaning of their work in a California card room casino. Ethnography and 10 qualitative open-ended, semi-structured interviews were utilized to understand the gendered and sexualized nature of work in the card room. The card room in this study was a male dominated space where traditional gender norms are fully emphasized. The female card dealers emphasized their beauty and other hetero-normative interactions with card players to generate tips. However, this gendered game had challenges for the participants, such as when the management did not protect their safety or personal space with overly aggressive customers. This study found that emotion work is a large part of how the women gain, keep, and negotiate power within this industry. The research is a micro-analysis of the larger societal problems that are related to our society from inequality of the work place, patriarchy, gender stereotypes, women as objects, and violence against women.
Speech Enhancement
We live in a noisy world! In all applications (telecommunications, hands-free communications, recording, human-machine interfaces, etc) that require at least one microphone, the signal of interest is usually contaminated by noise and reverberation. As a result, the microphone signal has to be "cleaned" with digital signal processing tools before it is played out, transmitted, or stored. This book is about speech enhancement. Different well-known and state-of-the-art methods for noise reduction, with one or multiple microphones, are discussed. By speech enhancement, we mean not only noise reduction but also dereverberation and separation of independent signals. These topics are also covered in this book. However, the general emphasis is on noise reduction because of the large number of applications that can benefit from this technology. The goal of this book is to provide a strong reference for researchers, engineers, and graduate students who are interested in the problem of signal and speech enhancement. To do so, we invited well-known experts to contribute chapters covering the state of the art in this focused field.
Cultural Transfer and Political Conflicts
Film festivals during the Cold War were fraught with the political and social tensions that dominated the world at the time. While film was becoming an increasingly powerful medium, the European festivals in particular established themselves as showcases for filmmakers and their perceptions of reality. At the same time, their prestigious, international character attracted the interest of states and private players. The history of these festivals thus sheds light not only on the films they made available to various publics, but on the cultural policies and political processes that informed their operations. Presenting new research by an international group of younger scholars, Cultural Transfer and Political Conflicts critically investigates postwar history in the context of film festivals reconstructing not only their social background and international dispensation, but also their centrality for cultural transfers between the East, the West and the South during the Cold War.

Building Back Better: How Big Are Green Spending Multipliers?
This paper provides estimates of output multipliers for spending in clean energy and biodiversity conservation, as well as for spending on non-ecofriendly energy and land use activities. Using a new international dataset, we find that every dollar spent on key carbon-neutral or carbon-sink activities can generate more than a dollar’s worth of economic activity. Although not all green and non-ecofriendly expenditures in the dataset are strictly comparable due to data limitations, estimated multipliers associated with spending on renewable and fossil fuel energy investment are comparable, and the former (1.1-1.5) are larger than the latter (0.5-0.6) with over 90 percent probability. These findings survive several robustness checks and lend support to bottom-up analyses arguing that stabilizing climate and reversing biodiversity loss are not at odds with continuing economic advances.
