They Came By Ship

They Came By Ship: The Stories of the Calitrani Immigrants in America is the product of the Internet Age which brought together people researching their roots to their ancestral town of Calitri in Southern Italy. They came to know one another and, in many cases, rekindled old friendships and discovered distant relatives in second and third cousins. They began sharing stories on the Net of the good old days, recalling neighborhoods where their parents and grandparents had settled after emigrating from Italy. These communities included Brooklyn, New Rochelle, Tarrytown, Dobbs Ferry, Batavia, Mount Vernon in New York; Montclair, Paterson, Newark in New Jersey; Stamford, Bridgeport, Torrington i...

The thesis provides different opportunities and ideas to face some current challenges in the electricity systems. It focuses on the effective and efficient integration of distributed low carbon technologies in the grid of the future. Planning and operation problems for different clean solutions, such as market bidding strategies for intermittent energy producers, demand side management algorithms for smart buildings, and electrical storage options for network operators, are studied for facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources in the power system chain.

Preserving Our History

PRESERVING OUR HISTORY takes a serious look into the history ofthe immigrants from the town of Calitri, Italy. These immigrants broughtwith them a strong sense of community and kinship. This helped easetheir transition into America as they spread out to various locations andmaintained their ties to fellow Calitrani as well as to their common valuesof family, faith, courage and mutual support. While gradually assimilatinginto their new environs, newcomers left paper trails of documentsand information, some fortunately still treasured and preserved bydescendents, many others stored in various archival institutes waiting tobe discovered and added to known facts.

This is the first anthology of British travel writing on Italy which traces the development of the genre and the history of the British perception of Italy from the Renaissance to the present. As an anthologie raissonnée it presents the texts in thematic clusters and chronological order, providing commentary and annotations for each of them and their nearly hundred authors (some of them, like Smollett, Byron, Dickens or Huxley, well-known, others virtually unknown, amongst them many unduly neglected women writers). Further features are a substantial introduction to the travelogue and the writing of Italy, more than thirty illustrations visualizing the British experience of Italy, and an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources.

This book provides an integrated approach to the assessment of seismic hazards. The reduction of losses expected by future earthquakes is probably the most important contribution of seismology to society. Large earthquakes occurred in densely populated areas highlight the dramatic inadequacy of a massive portion of the buildings demonstrating the high risks of modern industrial societies. Building earthquake-resistant structures and retrofitting old buildings on a national scale can be extremely expensive and can represent an economic challenge even for developed western countries. Earthquakes can cause also several psychological problems due to the fact that such kind of disasters will result in casualties, collapsing of houses, strategic buildings and facilities and deeply affect a community. Moreover in our society it is necessary to properly plan emergency responses and rescues taking into account any possible secondary effect in order to avoid more casualties.

Uncovers an overlooked aspect of the Italian American experience. In Beyond Memory, Dennis Barone uncovers the richness and diversity of the Italian Protestant experience and places it in the context of migration and political and social life in both Italy and the United States. Italian Protestants have received scant attention in the fields of Italian American studies, religious studies, and immigration studies, and through literary sources, church records, manuscript sources, and secondary sources in various fields, Barone introduces such forgotten voices as the Baptist Antonio Mangano, the Methodist Antonio Arrighi, and his great-grandfather Alfredo Barone, a Baptist minister to congregat...

Operation Colossus

“Provides an excellent overview of the development of parachute troops as well as an exciting battle narrative and gripping human interest story.” —Argunners Magazine Formed by a collection of free-thinking army and air force officers, the fledgling British paratrooper unit, known as the “SAS,” deployed trial and error in terms of tactics and equipment before an elite few were selected to make the first British parachute raid of the war, which took place in Basilicata, Italy on 10 February 1941. Collectively known as “X-Troop,” these men were parachuted by specially selected bomber crews into the heart of enemy territory, where they successfully destroyed their target, the Trag...
