The carole was the principal social dance in France and England from c. 1100 to c. 1400 and was frequently mentioned in French and English medieval literature. However, it has been widely misunderstood by contributors in recent citations in dictionaries and reference books, both linguistic and musical. The carole was performed by all classes of society - kings and nobles, shepherds and servant girls. It is described as taking place both indoors and outdoors. Its central position in the life of the people is underlined by references not only in what we might call fictional texts, but also in historical (or quasi-historical) writings, in moral treatises and even in a work on astronomy. Dr Robert Mullally's focus is very much on details relevant to the history, choreography and performance of the dance as revealed in the primary sources. This methodology involves attempting to isolate the term carole from other dance terms not only in French, but also in other languages. Mullally's groundbreaking study establishes all the characteristics of this dance: etymological, choreographical, lyrical, musical and iconographical.

Manchester Treasures

When my wife Carole and I joined the Old Trails Historical Society in 2010, I was approached by a member, asking me if I could take pictures of the old houses on Manchester Road. She wanted the pictures on a CD so that she could make a presentation at one of the local schools. I agreed, and before long my wife Carole and I were traipsing up and down Manchester Road taking pictures of the old historic homes. the CD was finished, and I thought that would be the end of that. Well, it wasn't. Being an amateur historian, I began to ask if there were other historic homes that we had missed. There were! Not only homes, but springs, creeks, caves, Indian mounds, and hidden cemeteries. At the same ti...

Statistical Models of Shape

The goal of image interpretation is to convert raw image data into me- ingful information. Images are often interpreted manually. In medicine, for example, a radiologist looks at a medical image, interprets it, and tra- lates the data into a clinically useful form. Manual image interpretation is, however, a time-consuming, error-prone, and subjective process that often requires specialist knowledge. Automated methods that promise fast and - jective image interpretation have therefore stirred up much interest and have become a signi?cant area of research activity. Early work on automated interpretation used low-level operations such as edge detection and region growing to label objects in ima...
