At its core, Supportive Care and Palliative Care is designed to minimize suffering in patients due to their illness or the treatment of their illness. This suffering can manifest in the physical, psychological, and spiritual realms. Additionally, most cancer patients have pre-existing co-morbidities that can exacerbate and complicate the treatment of their sources of suffering.Children require different assessment and communication strategies and strong participation by parents and primary clinicians in their care. Much has changed since the last edition of the Supportive and Palliative Care Handbook. Like cancer, COVID's devastating effects did not just impact those individuals who became i...

Psychological Aspects of Cancer

Psychological Aspects of Cancer: A Guide to Emotional and Psychological Consequences of Cancer, Their Causes and Their Management opens with two essays on the biological basis of emotion/mental-driven body processes and disease. The consequence of such considerations is that since thoughts and emotions can be modulated and changed by health care professionals, psychological counseling should be seen not only as a way to help patients cope, but possibly to influence the disease itself. A unique overview of a key area of cancer care, this important title then proceeds to offer a section on genetic predispositions to cancer and the psychological considerations involved in screening and pre-empt...

Toward a Sociological Theory of Religion and Health

Driven by funding agencies, empirical research in the social scientific study of health and medicine has grown in quantity and developed in quality. When it became evident, in what is now a tradition of inquiry, that people’s religious activities had significant health consequences, a portion of that body of work began to focus more frequently on the relationship between health and religion. The field has reached a point where book-length summaries of empirical findings, especially those pertinent to older people, can identify independent, mediating, and dependent variables of interest. Every mediating variable, even if considered as a “control” variable, represents an explanation, a small theory of some kind. However, taken in granular form, as it were, the multiple theories do not comprise mid-level theory, let alone a general theoretical framework. This volume seeks to move toward more general theoretical development. Contributors include: Alex Bierman, Sherry Cummings, Christopher G. Ellison, Andrea K. Henderson, Barbara Kilbourne, Neal Krause, Jeff Levin, Robert S. Levine, Eric Liu, Michael K. Roemer, Scott Schieman, and Ephraim Shapiro.

The information surveyed in this volulme is designed to provide the clinician with an expert overview of the current state of the art in breast cancer management. It should provide at least a flavor of the major paradigm shift that is occurring in this rapidly evolving field. Breast cancer management is moving away from a "kill or cure" model and advancing toward a model focused on strategies of prevention and of long-term management of breast cancer as a chronic disease. The acceptance of this new paradigm by patients and clinicians alike will represent a major focus for the twenty-first century.

Chaplaincy has emerged as a highly significant form of ministry in the twenty-first century, and chaplaincy studies is growing as a field of study that learns from the experience and work of chaplains in their diverse sectors. Chaplains from a range of different faith traditions pioneer ministry within the secular yet religiously plural contexts of contemporary life with often considerable creativity and skill, generating a wealth of insight to be gleaned for understanding the place of faith in the modern world. One of the disciplines that has been most concerned with gleaning those insights and developing the field of chaplaincy studies is practical theology. The journal Practical Theology ...
