Compared with other human and social sciences, communication theory appears to be of recent origin. Appearances deceive, however, for the antecedents of this growing field of work can be found in the classic philosophical treatises of western and non-western thinkers including Plato, Sextus Empiricus and Laozi, reaching forward through the theolinguistic tradition of St Augustine, Boethius, Averroës and Ockham before arriving at the modern age. Rethinking Communicative Interaction
From government eavesdropping to Internet crime, reality TV to computer-mediated communication and mobile telephones, the face of communication has fundamentally changed. The contingencies and complexities of communication can be witnessed in old and new media, in changing patterns of face-to-face interactions and the pluralization of the self and blurring of the distinction between the real and virtual. To date, theories of interaction have been slow to conceptualize communication in terms of its instabilities. Social communication models remain heavily indebted to an interaction paradigm which is often intuitive, epistemologically conservative and even a-critical. By contrast, an interdisciplinary programme in communication covers a complex field which requires the broadest possible range of approaches beyond current disciplinary confines. This collection seeks to examine some of the implications for our understanding of interaction when communication is conceptualized as a complex uncertainty.

Speaking the Taboo
Wolfgang Hilbig is a writer who is widely acknowledged as one of the most important to have emerged from the former GDR. In this study, the first in English, Paul Cooke explores the interplay of aesthetic and social ‘taboos’, as defined by the official discourse of the GDR, in a cross-section of Hilbig’s critical writing, poetry and prose. The protagonists in Hilbig’s texts suffer from a profound crisis of identity due to the disparity between the state’s official presentation of life in the East and their own experience. Cooke argues that through their exploration of the ‘taboo’, i.e. that which is excluded from the state’s official discourse, Hilbig’s characters attempt to break through the banal rhetoric of the ruling elite in order to realise an authentic sense of self.

Marcus Mosiah Garvey was once the most famous black man on earth. Educational Theory and Jewish Studies in Conversation: From Volozhin to Buczacz, by Harvey Shapiro, PhD, brings together two different fields of study--modern Jewish studies and contemporary educational theory--to provide new theoretical frameworks for their interaction. Although Jewish studies and education programs at secular universities have joined denominational and transdenominational institutions of higher learning in adopting a dual or parallel course structure, there has been little scholarly attention given to the basis for doing so. Shapiro provides alternative theoretical frameworks for the relationship between Jewish studies and educational theory and discusses different ways of developing and articulating these relationships between disciplines. Shapiro shows what is at stake when students and faculty think and communicate together across discourses--in particular, between the fields of education and Jewish studies. Presenting an alternative to conventional notions of interdisciplinarity, this book's import extends to virtually all relationships between the humanities and professional education when these different discourses illuminate and challenge one another.
The Poet’s Role
