This volume critically investigates how art historians writing about Central and Eastern Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries engaged with periodization. At the heart of much of their writing lay the ideological project of nation-building. Hence discourses around periodization – such as the mythicizing of certain periods, the invention of historical continuity and the assertion of national specificity – contributed strongly to identity construction. Performing Modernism
Der Band befasst sich mit der Moderne in Design und darstellender Kunst im Rumänien der Zwischenkriegszeit. Er folgt den transnationalen Wegen bemerkenswerter jüdischer Künstler/-innen, Schauspieler/-innen und Regisseur/-innen der Avantgarde, die in den 1920er- und 30er-Jahren in Bukarest tätig waren. Das Buch deckt einerseits die Geschichte von Bukarests erster moderner Designinstitution auf und untersucht die Verbindungen zu deutschem Design und Bauhaus. Der Fokus liegt andererseits auf innovativen Kollaborationen im Bereich des jiddischen Theaters, darunter der Aufenthalt der weltbekannten Wilnaer Truppe in Rumänien. Die Autorin zeigt auf, wie Bukarest mit Berlin, Riga und Chicago in Verbindung stand, und beleuchtet den Beitrag jüdischen Kulturschaffens zur Avantgardebewegung in Europa und darüber hinaus.
East Central European Art Histories and Austria
The specific role of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the later nation of Austria within the formation of regional art histories in East Central Europe has received little attention in art historical research so far. Taking into account the era of the Dual Monarchy as well as the period after 1989, the contributions analyze and critically scrutinize the imperial legacies, transnational transfer processes and cultural hierarchies in art historiographies, artistic practices and institutional histories. Consisting of 17 texts, with new commissions and one reprint, case studies, monographic essays and interviews grouped thematically into two sections, the anthology proposes a pluriversal narrative on regional, cultural and political contexts.

Art and Masculinity in Post-War Britain
In this book, Gregory Salter traces how artists represented home and masculinities in the period of social and personal reconstruction after the Second World War in Britain. Salter considers home as an unstable entity at this historical moment, imbued with the optimism and hopes of post-war recovery while continuing to resonate with the memories and traumas of wartime.
