Atlantic Bonds

A decade before the American Civil War, James Churchwill Vaughan (1828–1893) set out to fulfill his formerly enslaved father’s dying wish that he should leave America to start a new life in Africa. Over the next forty years, Vaughan was taken captive, fought in African wars, built and rebuilt a livelihood, and led a revolt against white racism, finally becoming a successful merchant and the founder of a wealthy, educated, and politically active family. Tracing Vaughan’s journey from South Carolina to Liberia to several parts of Yorubaland (present-day southwestern Nigeria), Lisa Lindsay documents this “free” man’s struggle to find economic and political autonomy in an era when fr...

Failure is not a failure when you fail; it can only become a failure when you have failed and refused to rise up and move on. In Failure Is Not Final, Kaeren McGrowder shares her experience about becoming pregnant in the church while still serving in the ministry. She honestly relates her inspiring story regarding her journey from falling from grace to gracious recovery. The author's story portrays the essential keys needed to overcome shame and guilt and to be transformed by the love of Jesus Christ. The crucial key is true repentance, like the story of the prodigal son in the Bible: "I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, Father I have sinned" (Luke 15: 17-18). This true repentance involves humility ("I will arise"), acknowledgement of sin ("I have sinned against heaven and before thee"), and faith in action ("And he arose and came to his father") (Luke 15: 20). No matter how serious the case may be, in spite of failure, shame, guilt, and rejection in life, we can overcome, recover, and be transformed by the love of Jesus Christ.

Speech Acts in the History of English

Speech Acts in the History of English

Did earlier speakers of English use the same speech acts that we use today? Did they use them in the same way? How did they signal speech act values and how did they negotiate them in case of uncertainty? These are some of the questions that are addressed in this volume in innovative case studies that cover a wide range of speech acts from Old English to Present-day English. All the studies offer careful discussions of methodological and theoretical issues as well as detailed descriptions of specific speech acts. The first part of the volume is devoted to directives and commissives, i.e. speech acts such as requests, commands and promises. The second part is devoted to expressives and assertives and deals with speech acts such as greetings, compliments and apologies. The third part, finally, contains technical reports that deal primarily with the problem of extracting speech acts from historical corpora.
