Health and Development
Health and development require one another: there can be no development without a critical mass of people who are sufficiently healthy to do whatever it takes for development to occur, and people cannot be healthy without societal developments that enable standards of health to be maintained or improved. However, the ways in which health and development interact are complex and contested. This volume unites eleven case studies from nine countries in three continents and two international organizations since the late-nineteenth century. Collectively, they show how different actors have struggled to reconcile the sometimes contradictory nature of health and development policies, and the subordination of these policies to a range of political objectives.

Rethinking Development and Health
A worldwide collaborative effort to measure the impact of health problems on people, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) is coordinated by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington in Seattle. Data for the project are collected and analyzed by 1,870 collaborators from 124 countries and three territories. GBD uncovers the toll of early death and disability caused by more than 300 diseases and injuries in 195 countries and territories from 1990 to the present. Its methods and metrics emphasize comparability among causes that kill and causes that disable. The GBD is frequently updated using new data to improve past and present estimates of disease burden. The GBD 2015 study shows that, from 1990 to 2015, the world as a whole has been undergoing an epidemiological transition. The nature of that transition is discussed in this document in a brief overview of some key GBD 2015 results.
